Payless Shoes has walked out of the building

I went to our vet last week because our two dogs were playing too hard and one of them needed stitches. The vet sent me away for a couple of hours while they worked their magic. I went next door to Payless Shoes at 5914 6th Avenue, Tacoma, to check out their going out of business sale. There was very little merchandise left. When I went back to the vet on Tuesday to pick up a second plastic collar, Payless was completely out of the building. I have no strong feelings about Payless Shoes, but it does make me sad to see another empty building in Tacoma. I wonder what will go in there and when.

Harbor Freight Tools

I was sent to Harbor Freight Tools at 5401 6th Avenue  Tacoma, WA 98406 to purchase knee pads. They had really good prices, perhaps because of the sale, and some unusual products. Their website is http://www.harborfreight.com/

Great mural at Tacoma’s Fire Station #16

Fire Station No. 16 at 7216 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, WA, 98406, is the site of art by Bob Henry titled Wilson Rams. The Tacoma-Pierce Co. Public Art Tour site (http://wspdsmap.ci.tacoma.wa.us/website/Art2/viewer.htm) says that the medium is Paint on canvas and the size is 10′ x 30′.

I love the bright colors and the fact that it is a local artist and a local scene! What I don’t like is that it is primarily visible from a small side street that leads to the driveway of the firestation and a small apartment complex. It would be great if more people could enjoy it!

Walgreens is now open

The Walgreens at 4315 Sixth Avenue has previously been the site of a small strip center. (See entry http://blog.firsttries.com/?p=1128). The store is next to a drive though Starbuck and while the construction was under way, it was really difficult to partake in a coffee fix! But now that the Walgreens is open, the two uses seem to be sharing their common ingress and egress without too many difficulties. The store is extra clean and the employees welcoming.

LA Fitness

I’d like to write that I went into LA Fitness at 5915 Sixth Avenue and had a vigorous workout, but the truth of the matter is that I snapped the photo while waiting for my dear husband’s birthday pizza to be ready for pick up! But it looks like a very nice health club! 😀

Satellite Coffee

Satellite Coffee at 2813 6th Avenue, Tacoma

I’ve heard such good things about Satellite Coffee and was glad to stop at their Sixth Avenue today, even though I’m going to be awake way into the night now! (Note to self, decaf after 3!). It was smaller than I expected and really flows into the adjacent restaurant, MASA. Although there is a walk up ordering window, I choose to go inside where it was warm. My Americano was good and reasonably priced (under $3 for a medium sized one). My barista was friendly. There was plenty of parking right out front, but I can see where parking has the potential of being a problem.

Their coffee is Stumptown Coffee, out of Portland, OR. http://www.stumptowncoffee.com/

They get their baked goods from Corinas Bakery. http://blog.firsttries.com/?p=2063

Satellite Coffee Co.’s main web presence is its Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/tacomasatellite

In addition to this location, there are two other Satellite Coffees in Tacoma, one downtown and one near Wright Park. (Updated note, there is now only one other location, the one in the Stadium (see blog entry http://blog.firsttries.com/?p=5790)

Here is an article about Satellite Coffee, though more about its downtown location. http://www.tacomaweekly.com/news/business/satellite_coffee_combines_with_smooth_and_juicey_on_market_street/

Do you know the mystery of the Jackson Senior Living Project?

I watched this building at 2358 Yakima Avenue being constructed, happy knowing that there were some construction folks with decent paying jobs. And then one day it all came to an end. The most recent newspaper story I could find about the property proclaims “Half-finished building project in downtown Tacoma gets new name, investors” and states that the project is now called the Jackson Senior Living Project. But except for security fencing being installed and some sealing of the property, no work has been done on the building for many months. If anybody knows any more, I’d be happy to update this new place of the day for 10/4/2010.
