Hilltop Mural

At 1012 South 11th Street in Tacoma’s Hilltop area there is a mural of four individuals against the background of Mt. Rainier. Per the Tacoma-Pierce County Public Art Tour website (Taylor.http://wspdsmap.ci.tacoma.wa.us/website/Art2/viewer.htm), “This mural memorializes key contributors to the Hilltop Community. Including, Alberta Canada, Ernest E. Brazil, Frank Russell, and Virginia Taylor”. It was created in 2004 by Bob Henry, who has other mural around town.

No longer the UnSafeway, I guess

Today I stopped at the recently remodeled Safeway in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. It is nicer than it was and it was also well maintained. Because it is the smallest Safeway in Tacoma there are none of the amenities that the larger Safeways have (bakery, Starbucks, deli, floral, etc.). The cashier I had was pleasant, but the shopping experience was not enhanced by the teen aged boys in the store strutting, posturing and cursing. And one of the adult customers was yelling at one of the cashiers.

Hilltop Christian Center

On my way to a holiday gathering, I stopped at Johnson’s Candy for treats to share. Drat, I’ve already used Johnson’s Candy! Oh, look, an interesting church just kitty corner from where I’m standing. That will do! The Hilltop Christian Center is on the corner of 10th & M.L.K. Jr. Way in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma, Washington. 1016 S. 10th. Street, Tacoma, WA 98405. The assessor’s office indicates that the building was constructed in 1950.

Their website says “We are a non-denominational church that’s committed to loving Christ. Our congregation is ethnically diverse and committed to the unity of all the saints of God.”

I thought it was interesting that their website has audio sermons. This week’s sermon is “Sexual Immorality is Killing the Church”.

Hilltop-McCarver Mural

Today I stopped at one of Tacoma’s newest installations of public art, the 60 foot long Hilltop-McCarver Mural at 2143 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Since this mural was dedicated recently on October 16th, I had seen a couple of photos. The mural itself is bold, whimsical and very well done. But I guess I had been assuming that it was the background for a park or public space and it is really just the background for a vacant lot that was pretty muddy when I took the photo. So lingering isn’t encouraged, which is a shame because there is so much detail to examine. The building that provides the wall space for the mural is vacant.

Yum! Sweets! Johnson’s Candy

In doing a little research about today’s new place of the day, I discovered that the company originally opened in 1918 as a small ice cream shop. The family owned business has a wonderful variety of candies including any kind of old fashioned chocolate that you could want. Their customer service is top notch and the place just has a comfortable feel about it. It is very much worth the trip!

The property is located at 924 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma; 253-272-8504.
