Tulip Town, Mt. Vernon

13593484365_1182d48495_b(1)I needed a change of scenery and the Skagit Tulip Festival is in progress, so off I went. It was a little early for the full effect, but the daffodils are in full bloom. In search for actually tulips, I stopped at Tulip Town in Mt. Vernon. For $5 per person, there is easy parking, a wonderful display building with background paintings of Holland, a great outside display with a windmill and huge kites and tulip fields in bloom. There is also the possibility of a tractor pull.

I also snapped a photo of a field of daffodils which isn’t in Tulip Town.

Mural at Last Stop Computers

12376192514_e1961b2c1e_bThere is a great mural wrapped around the lot of Last Stop Computers, 3101 Sixth Avenue. It features Mt. Rainer. There is also one of those dear carved bears welcoming visitors.

Parkland Mural

MuralThere is a Ed Kane mural next to the blue house at 412 Garfield Street. The house is echoed in the mural and there is also a white house and a brick building that I assume are original to the neighborhood. More information about the mural can be found here.

Technicolor Heart, Washington State University

heartJim Dine’s Technocolor Heart presides over the corner of Stadium Way and Grimes Way on the Washington State University (WSU) campus in Pullman, WA. The sculpture had been away from campus for part of 2011 and when it was reinstalled, it faced a different direction! Dine is a prolific artist in various medians with hearts being a common theme. Per the Guggenheim, Jim Dine lives in New York, Paris, and Walla Walla, Washington. There is an interview with him here. heart2 heart close up

Paper Source, Bellevue

11038019176_a3d1e4b2aa_bI was planning on spending some quality time at one of my favorite stores, The Paper Source at 700 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA 98004. Sadly I ended up being in such a time constraint that I only paused to snap the one photo. The Paper Source has an abundance of very cool kits, stamps, stationary, unique trinkets and gift wrap. I’m hoping to go back soon and spend some more time!

Tinkertopia, Tacoma’s Creative Reuse Center

IMG_5272The Tacoma Studio Tours happened on a rainy, windy weekend but I was determined to go to at least some of them. Tinkertopia at 1914 Pacific Avenue is really delightful and it would be easy to spend a great deal of time here, but not a great deal of money since everything is so reasonably priced. To get a sense of the place, check out the photos below and the website which has plenty of links to articles and a free mini poster! Tinkertopia is a Spaceworks Project and when their Spaceworks funding expires they will be able to continue with the generous support of University of Washington, Tacoma.

Throwing Mud Gallery

mud Luckily my friend reminded me that it was Art Mingle this afternoon. I decided to stay out of the main action downtown and go to the only option in Tacoma’s Old Town. It is Throwing Mud Gallery at 2212 North 30th, Tacoma, WA. They were very pleasant and told me that their gallery items were all regionally made (and really great!). Besides the gallery, there is studio space for throwing pots and painting and a work/party area (pictured). They offer all levels of classes. I was particularly interested in the monthly ladies night out which involves painting, snacks and wine. Throwing Mud’s website is here.
