Auburn Mountain View High School

I had a meeting today at Auburn Mountainview High School 28900 124th Ave SE Auburn, WA 98092. It really does have a lovely view of Mr. Rainier. Itis a lovely, newer school that is well maintained. There are 1,450 students.

Food for Fines

This delightful poster was discovered at the University of Puget Sound (UPS) Student Center. I love the idea of trading cans for the local food bank against library fines. I was at the student center to meet some friends for dinner. What a great deal dinner is there! I had a freshly grilled hamburger with curly fries and a soda for about $6.00.

Carwein Auditorium in the Keystone Building, UWT

Thursday evening dear daughter and I attended a roundtable discussion of those running for Tacoma City Council.  It was located in the Carwein Auditorium in the Keystone Building of the University of Washington, Tacoma. There were six candidates there with two of the candidates unable to attend. It was sponsored by the League of Women Voters Tacoma Pierce County.

The auditorium is obviously used as a classroom with desktops available on all the chairs.  We especially liked the cool paneling along the two main walls.  Though when I looked back at my photos of it, I realized that some of the holes had gum placed in them!

Big M Stained Glass/Boys Club/Longfellow School

Big M Stained Glass at 711 south 25th Street Tacoma, WA 98405 has one of the best signs in Tacoma! The building is home to pretty much anything one would need to make stained glass and they also do lovely custom work.

The site has an interesting history. In 1886 the South School was constructed. And in 1889, the three story primary school was renamed the Longfellow School. The school closed after 50 years in 1936 because the building had deteriorated. The school’s first 4th grade teacher was Fay E. Fuller who in 1890 because the first woman to climb Mt. Rainier. More information about the Longfellow School can be found here http://search.tacomapubliclibrary.org/buildings/bldg1up.asp?n=3810

The school was demolished in 1936 and the Tacoma Boy’s Club was constructed on the site in 1942. The club even had a year round swimming pool, which was added in 1951. In 1979 the Boys Club moved their operations to Stanley Playfield, where it is today. In 1983 the property was purchase and remodeled.

Lowell Elementary

The mascot of Lowell Elementary at 810 North 13th Street is the leopard.  Per Lowel’s website, it is the oldest school in the district and began as a log cabin in 1869 at N. 28th and Starr Street. It burnt down in 1875 and was rebuilt in 1885, and named Lowell in 1890. In 1892 a new building was constructed and the 1885 building became the annex. In 1949 an earthquake hit the region, killing one Lowell student and making the building unusable. In 950 the most recent Lowell and the one current being used was constructed and in 1961 the primary unit was built.  I was especially impressed with the mural on the side of an outbuilding on the site.

Mt. Tahoma High School

Wednesday I went to a very crowded meeting at Mt. Tahoma High School at 4634 S. 74th Street, Tacoma.   The original building was constructed in 1961. The school, which as named after the Native American name for Mt. Rainier, was substantially remodeled  in 2004. The school’s mascot is the Thunderbird.  The photo I took Wednesday isn’t very good, so I’m using photos from 2008.

Gray Middle School

Gray Middle School was one of six intermediate schools placed under contract in Tacoma in 1924.  Constructed in It was originally called  Captain Robert Gray Junior High School, named after the American naval officer and explorer who, in May 1792, was the first to sail a ship into the Columbia River, as well as Gray’s Harbor.

Geiger Montessori Elementary is in for a change

Geiger Elementary is in for a change by Gexydaf

Geiger School at 621 South Jackson Ave, Tacoma, WA 98465 is slated for demolition and the new Geiger School will be constructed on the site. While the construction is underway, the school program will be housed at the old Hunt Middle School Building (now empty) at 6501 S. 10th St., Tacoma. The mascot for Geiger is an orca whale.

The original school was built in 1949 and named after William F. Geiger who served as the Tacoma School District’s superintendent for 20 years. Geiger has been transitioning into a public Montessori program and as of this fall the Preschool through the 3rd grade will have that style of education.

Quaker Legs at the University Center, PLU

The North Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) had their Annual Session this week at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). Many of their activities took place at the University Center, which houses the university’s administration, cafeteria student store and one of the large meeting rooms. While I don’t like to take photos of people without their permission, I was pretty comfortable taking this shot of Quakers Legs. And none of the other shots came out!
