My pups look much better now that they have been to Balanced Dog at 4602B Pacific Avenue, Tacoma. The groomers were friendly and my two loyal dogs didn’t even notice when I left! Balanced Dog’s website is here.

Sammy’s Pizza
Dear husband and I were in search of lunch when we noticed Sammy’s Pizza at 1308 North ‘I’ Street, Tacoma. The restaurant had previously been under the Garlic Jim’s franchise and on Sixth Avenue, but now it is independent. The original intent was to have a liquor license and there is even a bar in place, but proximity to the local elementary school is problematic and as of our visit, beer and wine were not available. The restaurant is named after the owner’s dog. We had the special, which was a large meatball pizza and it was tasty.
Next to Nature Pet Food
Next to Nature at 1624 Tacoma Avenue, Tacoma, is a splendid pet supply store with friendly helpful staff. Today we stopped by with our two pups and purchased some holiday treats. Our pups were thrilled that the store had cats, though the store cats sensibly wanted nothing to do with them. I hadn’t realized that there are two other Next to Nature locations, one in Edmonds and the other in Seattle.
Per Tacoma Public Library, the building was originally the Coast House Materials Property which was founded in 1900 by Frank McHugh. In part of the 1980s and the 1990s, it was a hardware store. It closed in 1990. In 2001 Coast House Furnishings
opened and in July Next to Nature Pet Food opened.

Dawg Town Tacoma
I stopped to take a photo of this wonderfully playful mural at Dawg Town Tacoma, 1602 Tacoma Avenue South. It was early in the morning and there weren’t any dogs outside of this doggie daycare, training and grooming facility yet, but it was clear to see that there was a large outside play area. Looking over their webpage (see below), it appears that they also have specially designed inside space. What is extra fun is that there is a webcam, so that one can watch one’s furry friend having fun! When I took a look, there was a guy sweeping up and one dog (maybe his?). Belmarlow Addition, the first grocery store in UP
I had stumbled upon the Belmarlow a few years back when I went to an estate sale at the neighboring property. Today I rediscovered it and hopped out of my car to snap a photo. Two large dogs greeted me and they didn’t look too happy. So, I hopped back into my car! But then their owner called them off and gave me permission to walk around.
I couldn’t find much about the Belmarlow Addition, so I wrote to the wonderful professionals in Northwest Room at Tacoma Public Library. They said “According to the book, “Of Lions and Dreams, of Men and Realities” by Richard D. Osness published in 1976, the Belmarlow Addition was on 19th Street West, in an area of what is now University Place, and Belmarlow Beach was near the old day island bridge. Osness says a Francis M. Stephens built a store here in 1909, thus having the first grocery, general merchandise, hardware store in University Place area…although he says he had a tent store here even earlier during the summer months. The Belmarlow addition ran from 18th to 21st streets and from the water to Crystal Springs Road.”
Hidden Treasures in the Old Trolly Building
Today we stopped at Hidden Treasures in The Old Trolley Building. The street address is 3902 South 12th. The store’s space was larger than I first expected and includes a lovely tea room. Hidden Treasures really is packed full of interesting items — glassware, decorative items, vintage clothes, books, etc. And the owner’s (I think it was the owner) two darling dogs were there to interact with potential buyers. The building was constructed in 1890 as the Steilacoom Line Powerhouse for the Tacoma & Steilacoom streetcar line. By 1896 it was being used for railroad car storage and in1912 it was being used for commercial fuel and feed storage. In 1916 the railroad tracks were removed. In 1947 it was remodeled into the A-G Food Mart and Emmons Apartments. Other occupants have included a drugstore, meat market, salon, barbershop, paper products, hobby shop, furniture shop, lawn mower repair, sign maker, Radio & TV sales and repair, restaurant, carpet store and a preschool. I guess we need frogs
In a moment of weakness I said yea, sure, you betcha’ to dear daughter getting another pet. We already have two dogs, cairn terriers and that breed is ratters. So, all of those rodent kind of pets seemed like a bad idea (mice, rats, etc.). Dear daughter is sadly allergic to cats and the reptiles seemed to want to eat live things. We ended up with two African Dwarf Frogs and they are kinda cute in a froggy way. We had already purchased the aquarium and set it up and today we got the frogs. We went to Petco at 4028 Tacoma Mall Blvd, Tacoma. And no, I don’t have a photo of our frogs here (eye roll), I’ll get one soon.
Columbia Veterinary Hospital
I was in the market for a vet to handle the medical needs of my two pups. My last vet retired and closed up shop and I wasn’t too keen on the mega-vet I went to before that. It use to be that people usually went to the closest vet (or dry cleaner, or hair dresser, etc.), but nowadays we search for reviews. That’s what I did, I looked on Yelp and eliminated some vets with less than stellar recommendations. That lead me to Columbia Veterinary Hospital at 5916 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98406-2016 (253) 564-7927 .
It is a relatively small building and four veterinarians are listed as working here. They really seemed to love the animals and were good with them. My dog (unloyal animal that she is) would have happily stayed! They were kind enough to clip her nails, I job I truly hate! And the bill was somewhat less than I expected. So, all in all a good experience.
We topped it off with a trip to PetSmart for a new collar. I’m pretty sure the dog that I took went home and gloated to the dog that stayed home this time!
Starbuck’s Drive Thru
This Starbucks is the new place of the day for 9/25/10. Since I can’t think of anything to say about another Starbucks, I’m including as a bonus feature a photo of my dogs! Enjoy!
