Lakewood Veteran’s Memorial

I’ve driven past this sculpture in front of the Lakewood City Hall numerous times, but today I actually got out of my vehicle and took a good look at it. There is a lot going on with this piece, nine figures representing people in the military, a large globe, five benches, signage, inscribed bricks and landscaping. The sculpture honors veterans. Among the large metal figures are a Chaplin, a medical person, a foot soldier with his gun, a mechanic and others. The figures are stylized, but it is still apparent the jobs they represent. The primary construction materials are steel and bronze and the sculpture was completed in May 2003.

Per information provided by the Washington City/County Management Association, The project was spearheaded by the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Committee and reminds us of the sacrifices and services of the local military community. It also serves as a link between Lakewood and the large number of active duty, former and retired military personnel in our community. “More than 96,000 veterans reside in Pierce County with over 10,000 living in Lakewood. The memorial is the creation of Gig Harbor artist and military veteran Jim Mattern. (http://www.wccma.org/newsletter/0304wcmanews.pdf)

Here is the link to a story about the piece.

Tacoma Firestation #11

Today I took a moment to photograph Tacoma Fire Station No. 11 at 3802 McKinley Avenue. It is a relatively small, two story fire station and was placed into service on April 17, 1909. Looking at a photo of the station from 1910 (http://search.tacomapubliclibrary.org/buildings/bldg1image.asp?j=3&o=3&n=20900&i=6243#text), it looks much the same, though of course nowadays the fire trucks aren’t pulled by horses!

The particularly nice weathervane was dedicated on October 28, 1978.  The station was place on the National Historic Register on May 2, 1986.

There are 17 fire stations in Tacoma.

The City of Tacoma placed 11 individual fire related properties (9 stations, 1 ship and an alarm system) on the national historical register in 1983. The nomination form is located here:

Tacoma Water Works

Today I drove by and checked in to the Tacoma Water Works Building at 3501 South Union Avenue (previous address 3506 South 35th Street). Tacoma, WA 98409 (253) 502-8384. I’ve often admired the architectural style of this industrial building, which contains almost 40,000 square feet of space per the public record.  The building was constructed in 1937 at a cost of $137,000.  It is occupied by the Tacoma Water Department.  A photo of the building from 1977 can be found here:

A big thank you to Brian at the Northwest Room of the Tacoma Public Library and also my friend Mary! 🙂

Swan Creek Library will be closing

As of January 31, 2011, Tacoma Public Library System will have eight locations instead of its current ten. Both Swan Creek Branch and M.L. King, Jr. Branch will be closed. The main branch will also have its hours reduced from 66 to 54.

http://www.thenewstribune.com/2010/12/16/1467131/2-small-tacoma-libraries-to-close.html?storylink=rss

Swam Creek is the smallest of the libraries and shares its space with Tacoma Community House, which runs a literacy center for the local population. Per the library’s website, Tacoma Community Center has significant experience working closely with persons with little or no English language and comprehension skills, or without significant education experiences. Classes include English as a Second Language and computer skills. The library has an expanded foreign language materials selection and bilingual assistance is available in Russian and Cambodian, as well as Spanish and Vietnamese upon request. The door count (patrons entering the building) was over 4,000 in November, the last full month available. Many of the patrons walk to the branch and will soon need to take one or more buses to reach the next closest branch. It is true that Swan Creek had the lowest circulation statistics, which makes sense since they also had the smallest collection size.

Library materials and equipment from this branch will be redistributed to other branches, but the fate of the building and the Tacoma Community Center lease remains unknown. Although the building was built in 1989, there is deferred maintenance.

The closing of these two branches made me think of this Asimov quote. “When I read about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that American society has found one more way to destroy itself.”

Zoolights @ Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

Most holiday seasons we make our way to Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. We had good weather (no rain) and the display was as delightful as always. On the way out, we saw a zoo owl with its human.

I’d write more, but I want to go watch the eclipse!

Voting at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

Ok, I really didn’t need to go to the polls because I had already voted by mail. But I wanted to take a photo of a polling place and the one at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 3315 S. 19th Street in Tacoma was handy. I watched many voters coming and going and it made me happy to see so many taking this seriously.

As far as the church itself, it has very little internet presence, so I still don’t know much about it. I can say that it has a lovely building and a well tended yard!

The website for the Pierce County Auditor’s Office is http://www.co.pierce.wa.us/pc/abtus/ourorg/aud/elections/main.htm

I also received another FourSquare badge for voting!  http://foursquare.com/

Voting — A right and an obligation

A right and an obligation

Today I went to the Pierce County Building to drop my voting ballot in the box. I love how they make it so convenient. There were a bunch of complicated ballot measures this time and I spent some serious weekend time working on it. But I’m pretty happy with my choices and, as always, am proud that I voted. It’s an important part of being a citizen.

Evergreen Postal Station

Note:  This is an older New Place of the day that I had to redo!  Sorry about that 🙂

Today’s new place of the day, 9/15/10, was the Evergreen Postal Station in Tacoma near the Tacoma Mall.  This post office stays open until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is also open from 9 – 3 on Saturday, making it convenient for working folks.  Everytime I’ve gone in here, the employees have been effecient and friendly.
