Shari’s at 3902 Bridgeport Way, University Place 98466 became vacant in March 2012 when the company did not renew their lease. Apparently the site was going to be used as a bank, but now its future is in question and it remains vacant. An article on the closure can be found here: http://blog.thenewstribune.com/business/2012/03/21/sharis-restaurant-in-university-place-closes-plans-for-building-unclear/

Sequim Lavender Festival
I’ve been wanting to go to the Sequim Lavender Festival for years, but it seems like I always have had a conflict. But this year was looking good. Except that we left rather late and traffic into Sequim was awful and I we ran out of time. The festival downtown was great with more lavender stuff then I’ve seen for a long time. Next year I’ll go earlier in the day and right to the farms. Live and learn.

Cheddar Gorge Caves
Our local guide described the Cheddar Gorge is England’s Grand Canyon, only smaller. It was a very pretty area and village, but the caves were the highlight! Back in the day Cheddar Cheese was stored in the caves as can be seen in the photo. The caves were discovered in 1837. More about the area can be found here http://www.cheddargorge.co.uk/
Raygun Gothic Rocketship
Northern Fish Co.
Northern Fish Company at 2201 Ruston Way in Tacoma has a wonderful setting with Commencement Bay out its back door (if it had a back door!). There are two Northern Fish Co. locations in Tacoma with the other one being at 3911 South 56th. The Ruston Way location not only offers seafood to prepare at home, but also seafood chowders and baskets to either eat there or at home. Their website is here http://www.northernfish.com/
Boxcar Grill
My dear husband wanted to go to a new place today! Because of a review in the Weekly Volcanohe wanted to check out the Boxcar Grill in Freighthouse Square, 2501 E. D St., Tacoma. We enjoyed a late lunch. I had the Boxcar Patty Melt and he had the Chicken Fried Steak with eggs. We each ate about 1/2 because of the large portions. I really liked mine and he loved his saying it had real steak inside the coating instead of ground up beef. Service was delightful. The place opened in January 2012.
Mud Bay is Open
Mud Bay is a natural dog and cat food store located at 3804 Bridgeport Way (Green Firs Center), University Place, WA 98466. There are 23 Mud Bay Puget Sound locations. The store is cheerful and well stocked and the cashier was very nice. I picked up a card for my friend who is getting a new dog and two treats, one for each dog. (Though somehow the sneakier of the two dogs got both of them!).
Mud Bay’s website can be found here: http://www.mudbay.us/
State run liquor stores will be gone by June 1st, 2012
From the Washington State Liquor Board website
http://liq.wa.gov/transition/overview
With the passage of Initiative 1183, the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) will cease state liquor store and liquor distribution operations by June 1, 2012. Contract liquor stores – which are operated by small business owners – may continue to sell spirits, but state-run liquor stores will be closed. The Seattle Distribution Center – which supplies state and contract liquor stores with spirits – and its assets will be sold.
I didn’t really go into the liquor store at Tacoma Central Shopping Center today. Come to think of it, I haven’t been in a liquor store in years! Not that I have anything against them, I just don’t seem that interested. Last time I sent in I bought some rum for a rum cake.
But I was wondering about when the stores would be closing and this was my excuse to find out.
Washington State Surplus
Washington State sells equipment that it no longer needs at their General Administration Surplus location at 7511 New Market Street, Tumwater, WA 98512. My dear husband thinks it is great fun to go there and buy stuff for pennies on the dollar (if we need it or not). Today we bought a couple of VGA cords for me and some speakers for him. In the past he’s come home with a nice, rolling desk chair for $15 that we’ve used a great deal. Mostly they stock office furniture and equipment, but they usually have a nice selection of knives taken from people flying in commercial planes. Last time I was there, they were selling large crab traps!
