Lake Union Crew

This is the amazing view (notice the Space Needle in the background) from the Lake Union Crew Building at 11 East Allison in Seattle. It wasn’t until I was writing it up as a new place that I realized the entire building was a boat and moves around as needed! That makes it one of the most amazing buildings I’ve ever been in! Here is somebody’s photo of it floating around. (Thanks znep!)

There were some great houseboats next to the Crew building and I’ve included a photo of them 🙂

Charles D. Lancaster Temple

Built in the 1960s, the Charles D. Lancaster Masonic Temple at 4814 108th Street SW in Lakewood, WA is austere. While I’m sure it is to their advantage to have plenty of parking, the site would aesthetically benefit from some landscaping. The top photo shows the building from the front and the bottom photo shows it from the rear.

Sixth Avenue Farmer’s Market

It is finally farmer’s market season and today I stopped at the Sixth Avenue Farmer’s Market at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Pine Street. It is a lovely little market, with enough of everything — produce, flower’s, informational booths and art & crafts goods. I look forward to visiting it again soon!

Just a quick photo today of the Royal A. Gove Masonic Center at 3736 S. Sheridan Ave in Tacoma, WA 98418-3913. Although the building sign says Royal A. Gove Masonic Center, it seems to also be occupied by the Fern Hill Lodge #80. Per their website, the Masons here are active and accepting members (men).

Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital

Mary Bridge by Gexydaf

I had a lovely time at the benefit at the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma. The hospital itself is a lovely space with art to make you smile and a splendid garden.

The event there this evening was the Strawberries Festival sponsored by the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. More information about this fine group can be found here. http://www.multicare.org/marybridge?gclid=CJqAlL_L0qgCFRtKgwodHgqTgQ

Inspiration at Tacoma Public Library

Today dear daughter and I went to the Tacoma Public Library Main Branch to hear William Kamkwamba who co-wrote the incredible book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope). Both of us had enjoyed the book, finding it uplifting. William, a young man of 23, is inspirational. More about the Tacoma Reads program here.

It was the first time that I had been in a Tacoma Public Library on a Sunday and it felt good to see all the people there. The history of the library can be found here.

Currently in the gallery of the library there is an exhibit of art tiles, old and new, that is well worth seeing. That link can be found here http://www.tpl.lib.wa.us/Page.aspx?nid=64

Puget Sound Nuclear Free Weapons Zone

This home is dedicated to being a Nuclear Free Weapons Zone and its sign declares “40 miles from the largest single stockpile of nuclear warheads in the U.S.”

I confirmed this in an online article that states “The Trident submarine base at Bangor, just 20 miles from Seattle, has become home to the largest single stockpile of nuclear warheads in the U.S. arsenal“.

Recently in Tacoma five peace activists, the Plowshare Five, were sentenced to time in jail because of their form of political protest. It is a fascinating story and one well worth reading. The best source of information is their blog at http://disarmnowplowshares.wordpress.com/

My hat is off to them for living their beliefs.

Kalakala, is it sinking?

Kalakala by Gexydaf
Kalakala, a photo by Gexydaf on Flickr.

The newspaper yesterday talked about how the Kalakala was in danger of sinking because it is taking on water. I had just asked my husband last week if the vintage ferry boat was still at the port. We had gone to see it years ago and hadn’t heard much about it since.

http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/03/26/1600781/dreams-for-art-deco-ferryboat.html#storylink=misearch

I have no idea about the financial feasibility of restoring this ferry, which is in pretty bad shape, but I’ sure wish it could be brought back to its former glory. It was spectacular!

The website for the ferry has abundant information about it. http://www.kalakala.org/index2.html

I took a couple of shots from where it is docked and then went across the way to photograph it from across the Hylebos Waterway.

For a photo of the Kalakala when it was in Tacoma in the 1940s, see this webpage from the Tacoma Public Library.

Need a bunny? Go to the Humane Society

A darling little pup was wandering near a busy street and my husband took him home for safe keeping for the night. The dog was obviously somebody’s loved pet, but I didn’t find any signs or see anybody looking. So today I took him to the Tacoma Pierce Co. Humane Society, so that he can be reunited with his rightful owner.

The Humane Society does good work and I respect them for it. There website is here: http://www.thehumanesociety.org/

Note, although I took a photo of a darling rabbit, it is only a good pet if you are ready for the responsibility. If you’re not ready for bunny ownership, then buy a delicious chocolate rabbit for Easter!

Al Davies Boys & Girls Club

I really admire today’s new place of the day. Al Davies Branch of the Puget Sound Boys and Girls Club is located at 1620 S. 17th St., Tacoma, WA 98405, (253) 502-4631.  This facility provides a safe and enriching place for children between the hours of 2:30 and 7, Monday – Friday.

The organizations webpage says that  Boys & Girls Clubs provides our community’s children with:
1. A safe place to learn and grow
2. Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals
3. Life-enhancing programs and character development
experiences
4. Hope and opportunity

This is a Kids At Hope facility and the children recite the Kids At Hope pledge daily:
I am a kid at hope.
I am talented, smart and capable of success.
I have dreams for the future, and I will climb to reach those dreams and goals every day.

No child is ever turned away for economic reasons.
