Spooner Farm

9084627337_99701f6757_b(1)So, I went to the Proctor Farmer’s Market to buy so delicious strawberries from the Spooner Farm booth and they were sold out. Fine. I understand. So, I swung by the house and grabbed dear daughter to go visit Spooner Farm at 9622 State Route 162 East, Puyallup, WA 98374-1812. It was worth the trip. They have a gift store with all kinds of quality farm related items. Dear daughter fell in love with a darling apron (which we’ll get next time) and we purchased a 1/2 flat of strawberries, a jar of raspberry jam, scone mix, some fudge and some cold drinks. Dear daughter went home and made fair scones and strawberry shortcake. Dear husband declared the strawberries the best he had eaten since his childhood.

Spooner Farms has a variety of crops and is sounds like they have a great harvest festival. When we drove away from the store, I noticed this really big chair with a view of the fields and Mt. Rainier.

Paul Bunyan Rifle & Sportsman’s Club

8712126209_9c2833f05b_bI was driving down Meridian in the South Hill area of Puyallup when I decided to turn around. My turn ended up being the entrance to the Paul Bunyan Rifle and Sportsman’s Club at 17902 Meridian East, Puyallup, WA. The club was founded in 1945 and the land purchased from Weyerhauser Timber Company in 1946. There website is here.

Epic Mural in Puyallup

8620091265_44c58141f9_bI was driving around the other day and found this terrific mural 2914 East Main Avenue. It is a Trompe-l’œil style and I was tempted to drive on through to the beautiful mountain sunrise. But of course that would be a bad idea. I think the building is used as apartments. There is a sign on one of the doors that says “Due to the recent thefts, the upstairs tenant has been instructed to shoot … then call police“.

Winds of change at Van Lierop Gardens

Van Lierop Bulb Farm at 13407 80th St E  Puyallup, WA 98372 is one of two bulb farmers left in the Puyallup Valley and it is closing its door on May 15, 2013. I stopped in today and it made me kind of sad because the store seemed rather empty. The fields are full of daffodils poised for blooming.

Western Washington State Fair, Our Body The Universe Within

When dear daughter and I went to the Western Washington State Fair last weekend we simply forgot to see the Our Body, The Universe Within exhibit and afterward that made me sad. But, on the last day of the fair, we decided to go again. Yes, there were scones involved.

I had decided not to take photos in the exhibit because it just didn’t feel respectful. Just as well since photography was not permitted, nor were cell phones. Really good photos can be found on the exhibit’s website http://www.ourbodytheuniversewithin.net/. It was a very interesting exhibit and I learned a few things. The part that captivated me the most was that they took one body and sliced it into 12 pieces sideways. So the two end pieces each had an ear and in between we saw muscle, bone, organs, etc. The individual organs were also fascinating. The stomach was smaller than I thought and the thyroid was larger. There was a brain that had been damaged by a stroke and lungs that had been ruined by smoking. The exhibit made dear daughter a tad queasy.

Western Washington State Fair, Hobby Hall

I love the exhibits at the Hobby Hall at the Western Washington State Fair! The people that create the exhibits are my people — interesting, smart, quirky, and a bit obsessive. The Hobby Hall is one of the fair places we always go along with the scone stand, the hot tub display (where we dip our hands), and the building with the photos and quilts and such (good bathroom on the second floor!). The exhibit building was constructed in 1939.

While we were there we talked to the ham radio folks and the astronomy guy and we saw wonderful collections (Titanic, holiday ornaments, sheep, smiley faces, Sailor Moon, Starbucks, Coke, Whiskey, hand puppets, nutcrackers, kimonos, dollhouses and many more).

Casa De Leche in Puyallup

Casa de Leche is located in the Gold Parking Lot near one of the main entrances to the Puyallup Fairgrounds. My Spanish is rusty (or almost non existant), but it seems to me that it translate to the house of milk. The fun cow shaped sculpture was created by Bruce and Shannon Anderson and is part of Puyallup’s Arts Downtown’s Permanent Art Collection. The Anderson’s website can be found here http://www.andersenstudios.com/index.html

Regal Theater, Puyallup

My family had made a point to watch all of the movies that lead up to the Avengers, but then two of us went on a long trip and somehow it seemed like we’d missed it on the big screen. But yesterday dear husband noticed that it was still playing at the Regal Longston Place Stadium 14 at 13317 Meridian Avenue in Puyallup. The movie was great and we are glad to have made the effort to see it. The theater itself was just fine with friendly employees and comfy seats. Our theater only had a dozen or so customers in it and we were a little surprised when the security person came through with her glow stick three times. Wonder if that has always been the procedure or if it was in response to the recent movie shooting in Colorado.

Lovely Flowers at Glacier View Jr. High

The family had a meeting at Glacier View Jr. High School in the South Hill area of Puyallup today and I had to take some photos of the lovely metal flower sculpture! The website for the school is here http://schools.puyallup.k12.wa.us/junior/glacierview/index.htm The school’s mascot is a Yati.
