Good Service at Willamette Dental

Not every day is a park, a restaurant or a museum… some days are the dentist. And today was such a day for both my daughter and I. I have to say that the care has always been good for me at Williamette Dental, but as of late, their service has greatly improved. We got appointments for the same date/time and instead of having to wait for months, it took less than a week. And they are now providing reminder calls. I’m impressed! Our previous dentist moved on, but I really like the new one. So, altogether, not as much fun as many things, but not bad either.

Charles D. Lancaster Temple

Built in the 1960s, the Charles D. Lancaster Masonic Temple at 4814 108th Street SW in Lakewood, WA is austere. While I’m sure it is to their advantage to have plenty of parking, the site would aesthetically benefit from some landscaping. The top photo shows the building from the front and the bottom photo shows it from the rear.

El Paraiso Fish Taco & Mexican Food at 2510 84th Street in Lakewood had been on my to do list ever since I read a review in the Tacoma News Tribune.

Today we had some time to spend before a movie so we stopped in and had the fish tacos. They were indeed very tasty and also reasonably priced. The setting isn’t fancy, but that is more than offset by the food, the price and the friendly staff.  And, if you are curious, Paraiso translates to Paradise!

My dear husband bought himself a Nook and this evening we went for Nook training at the Lakewood Barnes & Noble. No, really. It is a darling little machine and the training was good. While I enjoy print books, I have no problem with ebooks and appreciate that I can order most books and have them in hand (as it were) in the matter of minutes. And I love that I can save space and perhaps even let some of my secondary books move on to a new home.

The Battle for Fort Steilacoom was fought yesterday and today in Fort Steilacoom Park, 8714 87th Ave. S.W., Lakewood, WA, 98499. The Washington Civil War Association produced this event and it was very well done. There were hundred of reenactors in their Civil War garb. They were playing instruments, fighting battles, making speeches, drilling, cooking and selling their wares. It was a pleasure to stroll around in the sunshine and visit with these fine folks.

Today our family was celebrating and we decided to try a new to us restaurant, Casa Mia Italian Restaurant at 7304 Lakewood Drive, Suite 1, Lakewood, WA 98499. We’ve been looking for a local Italian restaurant that is more than a pizza place, but won’t break the budget. Casa Mia was just what we wanted. We had Rosemary Chicken Ravioli, Manacotti and a submarine sandwich. All three were delicious and the service was fast and friendly. I’ll have to try a pizza sometime soon. The chicken pizza with three cheeses looks particularly tempting!

Casa Mia Italian Restaurant is a chain of eight (Lakewood, Yelm, Olympia, Hoquiam, Kennewick, Lacey, Puyallup and Richland). The first of them opened in 1952 in Hoquiam.

Target has all the sundry items I might want

I was in need of sundry items and was in the neighborhood of the Lakewood Target, so in I went.  The good things about Target are that it is always clean and fairly well staffed, their stock is refreshed regularly,  they have decent prices and a broad selection.  The not so good is that hardly anything they sell is made in America.

Lakewood Veteran’s Memorial

I’ve driven past this sculpture in front of the Lakewood City Hall numerous times, but today I actually got out of my vehicle and took a good look at it. There is a lot going on with this piece, nine figures representing people in the military, a large globe, five benches, signage, inscribed bricks and landscaping. The sculpture honors veterans. Among the large metal figures are a Chaplin, a medical person, a foot soldier with his gun, a mechanic and others. The figures are stylized, but it is still apparent the jobs they represent. The primary construction materials are steel and bronze and the sculpture was completed in May 2003.

Per information provided by the Washington City/County Management Association, The project was spearheaded by the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Committee and reminds us of the sacrifices and services of the local military community. It also serves as a link between Lakewood and the large number of active duty, former and retired military personnel in our community. “More than 96,000 veterans reside in Pierce County with over 10,000 living in Lakewood. Burger King morphs into Starbucks

 Today I went to Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), but all the coffee shops and bookstores were closed for the new year holiday.  I needed a book, so I veered off to the Lakewood Barnes and Noble, but I couldn’t count that as a new place.  On the way I went past a yet unrecorded Starbucks.  Good old Starbucks.  This one use to be a Burger King and you can tell by looking at it.  The worker said that Starbucks had been there for about 6 to 7 years and they had originally thought about making a loft area where the burger places’ play area had been.  But in the end they went with the tall ceiling instead.  Starbucks only has half of the building and the rest is available for lease.

Ruby Tuesday, one choice for the holidays

Today we went to see the Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 3D My dear daughter and I had recently rewatched the first two movies in the series and were looking forward to this recent installment. We really loved it. Much of the movie was set on the ship and the visuals of the sea were stupendous.

Anyway, we had 30 minutes to eat lunch. My dear daughter gets rather grumpy when not feed, so it was important to eat. While large chain restaurants are not our first choice, it was Ruby Tuesday or a Sports Bar and Ruby Tuesday was the clear winner. We had an appetizer each (a single crab cake for me and spinach dip for her) and also sodas. With the tip, it came to $30, which seemed kind of expensive. The food was good, but not that special. Service was pleasant and understanding about our short time frame.

There are 890 Ruby Tuesday locations, including several overseas spots (Chile, Iceland, India, Egypt, Hong Kong, and more). The original restaurant opened in 1972 in Tennessee. The chain is named after the Rolling Stones song.
