Famous Footwear

Famous FootwearA quick stop today at Famous Footwear at Tacoma Central Shopping Center (the Target Center) to check out cute discounted boots, which were either the wrong size or the wrong color. You know what I’m looking forward to? Cute spring sandals! Hopefully soon!

Franke Tobey Jones

12601965273_abd3f52f71_bFranke Tobey Jones at 5340 N Bristol St, Tacoma, WA 98407 is not-for-profit senior community with independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing facility and it has lovely grounds. I was there to hear a talk about the woman for which the center was named. The center opened in 1925. Franke Tobey Jones, who provided the building site and the funds for the original building, was the wife of Charles Jones, who was associated with the Tacoma Lumber Company. It originally housed 65 residents each with their own room and shared bath. Over the years there was considerable expansion to the facility that it is today.

Mrs. Jones herself never lived in the facility. She was however an amazing woman who crossed the continent 85 times, as well as traveled to such far-flung places as Japan and China, She was born on May 22, 1845 (the same day as me, but different year) and passed away on April 25, 1941. She is buried next to her husband in the Tacoma Mausoleum.

Mural at Last Stop Computers

12376192514_e1961b2c1e_bThere is a great mural wrapped around the lot of Last Stop Computers, 3101 Sixth Avenue. It features Mt. Rainer. There is also one of those dear carved bears welcoming visitors.

Dalco Passage

12280410435_512a2bf47b_c(1)While others were watching the Superbowl, I went out to give my new camera a spin. It was kind of eerie being out with almost everyone watching the game. Though there were plenty of police and taxis.  I wandered through Five Mile Drive in Pt. Defiance and took a shot of Dalco Passage, thinking that I would find a fascinating history of Dalco, but no such luck. All I can find is that Dalco Passage is a tidal strait in the Puget Sound, located between the southern end of Vashon Island and Tacoma. Below are a couple of more shots including the sweet beggar of a raccoon (which I didn’t feed). And go Seahawks!

Seahawks House III

12275749606_e7809ffb49_c(2)You have to admire somebody who would paint his fence in Seahawks colors! This house is located on the corner of South ‘M’ Street and South 62nd. If you look close you can see one of the owner’s two dobermans barking at me! Go hawks!

There is a small, private park named City Haven Peace Park located next to the Quaker Meetinghouse/Hillside Community Church at 2508 39th Street South. This space has an abundance of birds, squirrels and an occasional raccoon. There are also several inuksuk, which are rock formations roughly shaped like humans.

Red Mural on Barrier Blocks

11914588524_de7eff5609_bOne has to look hard for the mural on the barrier blocks at 5699 Pipeline Road East, Tacoma. But they are worth the Eastside search with their bold, red color and jaunty graphics. My favorite barrier (if one can have a favorite barrier) is the one with the word ‘Adventure’ on it! The artists are Natalie Oswald, K. Candejas, Y. Simone and J. Warren. The Tacoma Murals Project mural was created in 2012. The top photo shows the barriers as they sit and the bottom photo shows them Photoshopped side by side.
