MV Lotus

The MV Lotus was moor along the public dock during Maritime Fest this weekend in Tacoma. The vessel, which is on the historic register, was built in 1909 as Edwardian Houseboat Cruiser. It is available for event and would be perfect for a wedding! More information can be found here: http://www.mvlotus.org/

Update 6.18.17 We again went to the Tall Ships event (to see the Big Rubber Duck) and here are a couple of new photos of the MV Lotus.

 

Airports, Texas & Washington State

Today was a traveling day with stops at the Dallas Fort Worth international Airport (DFW), George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and SeaTac International Airport. The photos are a mixture of the three spots.

Union Station, Seattle

I’ve been past Union Station at 401 South Jackson Street, Seattle, many a time, but today I actually went inside. It was lovely and reminded me of large stations in Philadelphia and New York City. Constructed in 1911 as a train station, it looks much the same today. The property ceased being a train station in 1971, was placed on the Historic Register in 1974 and was renovated in the late 1990s. The hall can be rented out for events.

One of the workers saw me snapping some photos and said that she loved working in such a beautiful building. Of course to off set that nice moment, some guy asked me for $0.50 to make a phone call!

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, in Wales has one of the longest place names in the world. The village/train station originally had a shorter name, but in the 1800s they were renamed in an effort to increase tourism. The picture below shows the gift store.

The Bike Rack Near City Hall

We were walking back from a performance at Urban Grace Church when I noticed this good looking covered bike rack near City Hall. At first glance I thought it was a bus stop, but no. Apparently the city as installed 96 of these bike racks and in May was named a Bicycle Friendly Community. That’s cool. To read more about it, go to http://www.cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?hid=18226

Tacoma Dome Station

The Tacoma Dome Station at 610 Puyallup Avenue, Tacoma is a major hub with the buses, Link and Sounder all right there. The station includes two seven story buildings and contains 2,500 parking spaces. It cost $10,500,000 to build in 1999.

A Glorious Day at Thun Field

We are going through a miraculous run of lovely weather for the beginning of February. The temperature went up to 57 degrees and it was sunny. I found myself in the South Hill area of Puyallup with a couple of hours to myself. I drove myself to Thun Field and for the price of a cup of tea and a piece of pie I sat outside in the sun and watched small planes take off and land. I especially enjoyed seeing three generations (grandfather, father, son) enjoying a late breakfast and watching the planes.

Thun Field is owned by Pierce County. Their website says “Thun Field was built in 1944 and purchased by Pierce County in 1979. Situated just south of the City of Puyallup in the South Hill neighborhood, Thun Field offers spectacular views of Mount Rainier. There are approximately 225 aircraft based at the airport, and approximately 89,000 operations (take-offs and landings) each year.”

It’s the End of the World, As We Know It

Dear husband said he’d be happy to show me a splendid new place of the day and he took me here to South Tacoma Way and Sprague where they are tearing down the old Nally Valley overpass and have constructed the new one. This scene will not be here long! Husband and I agreed that it was very post apocalyptic. And nothing says Christmas Eve like Post Apocalyptic!
