For some JuNkTaStIc Fun!

Today’s new place of the day is the “JuNkTaStIc SuNdAyS” Market, which is held on Sundays through December 19th from 9am — 4pm.   The market is located at the Studio 6 Ballroom, 2608 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA, 98406.  There were plenty of interesting vendors and the owner told me that they switch out regularly, keeping the stock of available goods fresh.   We were enchanted by the vendor selling Hex Bugs, delightful mini robots!  We picked up two as stocking stuffers and a larger one as a holiday present.  I need to go back after payday to pick up some of the fun jewelry!

Gritty City Gift Fair

Today’s New Place of the Day is the Speakeasy Arts Cooperative’s Gritty City Gift Fair. The fair was larger than I thought it would be and filled with quality crafts and art. I picked up a couple of holiday gifts and a Tacoma — Love it or Leave it t-shirt for myself. 🙂 The co-op is located in a historic building at 746 Broadway, in the Antique Row area.

Information from the Tacoma Public Library indicates that the building was constructed in the 1920s and has been used as a Used Car Department, Huletz Electric Co., Preservation Paint, Alma Ayres Women’s Wear, Washington State Liquor Store, and Time Machine Antiques.

The Hand of God, the Youth For Christ Mural

Today I drove past the Youth for Christ mural on the Alliant Continuum Care Building at 201 N. I Street in Tacoma. The City of Tacoma Public Art Tour site describes the mural as “Two joining hands are rendered by the inclusion of small religious symbols”. It is, of course, a variation of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam which is a fresco on the Sistine Chapel.

The website for Alliant Continuum Care is here http://www.alliantcare.com/ , but I went to the property to see the mural. Part of my effort to see new places with art as part of Tacoma Arts Month.

Hilltop-McCarver Mural

Today I stopped at one of Tacoma’s newest installations of public art, the 60 foot long Hilltop-McCarver Mural at 2143 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Since this mural was dedicated recently on October 16th, I had seen a couple of photos. The mural itself is bold, whimsical and very well done. But I guess I had been assuming that it was the background for a park or public space and it is really just the background for a vacant lot that was pretty muddy when I took the photo. So lingering isn’t encouraged, which is a shame because there is so much detail to examine. The building that provides the wall space for the mural is vacant.

For two great sites that discuss the mural, go here:

People’s Park Mural

I was thinking that since November is Tacoma Art Month, that I’d try to do most of my new place of the days with an art theme. First up is the mural in Peoples Park at 924 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. I cleverly took this photo yesterday when it wasn’t raining and then drove past again today so that I could say I’d been there! I love this mural which depicts the area as it use to be including a trolley and a farmer’s market. At first I thought the trees were in the way of the mural, but now I think they add to the photo 🙂

Mighty Tacoma

Today’s new place of the day is Tacoma! I found it’s possible to check into a city instead of a specific place. Of course I was at a particular place in Tacoma, the Art Museum (which I’ve already used as the new place of the day). Dear husband and I went to the 3rd Thursday Art Walk and to see the Mighty Tacoma photographic exhibit. I highly recommended it! The photo below was taken in Opera Alley (I think) some time ago, but it goes with today’s Tacoma theme.

Jo-Anns for Crafting & Art Needs

My dear daughter informed me that she needed oil pastels desperately and we went to Jo-Anns in Tacoma to have our craft needs met. I sent said daughter off with my phone/camera to snap a couple of photos while I waited in line to check out. This is the photo we both liked the best. 🙂

There are 29 Jo-Anns in Washington State and I guess that Spokane is the craftiest city because they have three!

A Daily Suicide, Washington State History Museum

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

The Washington State History Museum, located at 1911 Pacific Avenue was today’s new place of the day and it was a real treat to have a chance to look around. The photo is of Handcrafted Native American masks in the Epidemic Memorial exhibit. The sign adjacent to the mask is titled Daily Suicide and in part states “Forty-five is another magic age for the Indian. That’s the age of death from alcoholism…it’s a daily suicide”. It’s a very powerful exhibit.

Since the orginal blog, it has been announced that the State History Museum will be closing.  I hope not.  It will be a tremendous loss for the State of Washington.

Paper Zone

Today I ran into the Paper Zone in Tacoma Central Shopping Center off of Union and South 23rd. There is just something so inspiring about all those stamps, art paper and crafts! There are six Paper Zone locations in Washington State and three more in Oregon.

General information about the stores can be found here

And their blog, with some fun craft ideas, is located here

Update: 5.6.2011  I’ve heard that the Tacoma Paper Zone is closing the door at the end of May 2011.  Makes me sad.
