Pierogies at the Russian Market in Tacoma

About 16 years ago I tutored a lovely woman from Russia in English. We worked together a couple of years and while we were fairly different we really got along. Towards the end of our time together she had her 10th child and her husband left her to return to Russia.

I remember one holiday season I was given about 10 passes to zoolights. I had the brain storm that it would be fun to take my friend and her nine (at the time) kids and I would buy the tickets for me and another friend. I told her there was no cost, but because of our language differences didn’t even try to explain that somebody had given me complimentary tickets.  When we met up at Zoolights, I was surprised to find that my Russian friend had indeed brought her nine kids, as well as her folks, her sister, her sisters six kids and maybe a few more.  Ummm. I really didn’t have the funds to cover that many and they sure didn’t either. So we sent the large Russian contingency in first with all the tickets that we did have. They handed over the tickets and the poor zoo worker started counting them and counting the crowd (all of whom were jabbering away in Russian) and then the zoo worker threw up her hands and ushered everybody in! Problem solved.

All of this came back because my dear daughter informed me yesterday that she had to have pierogies for dinner. Her father had recently introduced her to pierogies and she really took to them! And apparently the pierogies at the the Russian Grocery were the very best.  The Russian Grocery Store’s real name is Friendly Foods and it is located at 3612 Center St #B in Tacoma. It is the size of a large convenience store and is stock full of foods imported from Russia. Most of the customers and workers were speaking Russian (which is what reminded me of my friend!).  I picked up three types of pierogies, though there were probably another eight types there — mostly meat, but also a black cherry. The store included a wonderful bakery case and a deli.

Tacoma Food Co-Op

The Tacoma Food Co-Op at 3002 6th Avenue, Tacoma opened on August 26, 2011. It has a lovely mural on the outside wall. I walked through the store, which use to be a corner grocery and explored their unusual stock.  Their website says “The member-owners of the Tacoma Food Co-op recognized the need for an affordable urban natural foods grocery that would provide local organic and natural foods, as well as a community around these foods.”

Small Commercial Building

On Sunday the time got away from me and it was dusk before I was driving home and realized I didn’t have a new place of the day. After a fair amount of indecisiveness I said to myself that I was using the next commercial building I saw! This small commercial building at 711 48th Street was the one! It was built in 1921 and as of 1931 was functioning as a grocery store.

Fred Meyer has pretty much everything!

While reading over the Sunday paper, I noticed that Fred Meyer at 6305 South Bridgeport was having a sale that included a tech gadget I had been needing. And I also needed groceries and the kid was demanding new sheets (something about a huge hole in hers!). Luckily Fred Meyer’s seems to have it all. The Fred Meyer in University Place is a newer building and is well maintained. Its a bit further for me to drive, but seems worth it to me.

A tasty way to eat healthy~

The city of Tacoma is blessed to have Tacoma Boys as our homegrown produce stand and meat market. I have never been disappointed with anything I’ve purchased there and its one of the few places that when they tell me my total bill, I feel like I’ve gotten a good value.

The Center for Disease Control says “Almost Everyone Needs to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables”. By going to Tacoma Boys and buying fresh produce, often in season and local grown I am making the CDC happy and supporting my community. It makes me smile!

No longer the UnSafeway, I guess

Today I stopped at the recently remodeled Safeway in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. It is nicer than it was and it was also well maintained. Because it is the smallest Safeway in Tacoma there are none of the amenities that the larger Safeways have (bakery, Starbucks, deli, floral, etc.). The cashier I had was pleasant, but the shopping experience was not enhanced by the teen aged boys in the store strutting, posturing and cursing. And one of the adult customers was yelling at one of the cashiers.

Safeway

Nothing too exciting today, just a stop at a different Safeway at 707 South 56th Street, Tacoma. This store had been a Safeway for years and then it closed and was available for rent for a long time. But it sat vacant and then finally Safeway renovated and reopened. It’s a smaller store, but nicely maintained.

The store is all geared up for Thanksgiving and here is their Thanksgiving link.

Safeway on Pearl

Even though the weather had warmed into the mid-70s, the season and decoration says autumn. This isn’t the fanciest Safeway in town, that title is held by the one in the Proctor District, but it’s pretty darn nice.

On 8/16/2010 I stopped at the Proctor Safeway on the way home from a meeting. The store has recently had a complete renovation and is now one of the nicest grocery stores in town. No doubt the renovation was at least partially inspired by the neighboring Metropolitan Market. The good points are nice employees, great produce & selection of products, a lovely store and an inside/outside fireplace. The downsides are the parking, which is somewhat limited (especially during busy times) and the store isn’t very large.
