Ferry Park

Ferry Park

Taking advantage of the last day of summer (9/20/10) I stopped at Ferry Park at corner of S 14th & Cushman Avenue. This is a relatively small park surrounded by residences in the Central Neighborhood. The park features playground toys, picnic tables and a large open area. When I stopped by at four in the afternoon on a sunny day, it was empty! Per the City of Tacoma’s website (see below) the land for this park was donated by Clinton P. Ferry May 14, 1883.

Raft Island

Today was another extra special new place of the day (9/19/2010). I can’t believe there is an island around that I hadn’t visited! There is even a bridge there, so it’s not like it’s difficult. Raft Island is home to three artists in the Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour 2010. There was Pen & Ink artist Mike Neil (#7), Kate Larsson (watercolors), Patrice Bruzas collage/sumi), Sharon Carr (paintings) #8 combined and Doug Fillbach, art glass(#9).

Raft Island is pretty much a residential community with many of the properties having water views. Information about it can be found here http://raftisland.org/

The Open Studio Tour was lots of fun. We didn’t get to all of them, but the ones we did visit were gracious and very talented, Information on the annual tour can be found here. http://www.gigharboropenstudiotour.org/

I thought the new place of the day was going to be the Blazing Onion Restaurant where we had lunch. It is a normal sized restaurant space with good food. I walked through the restaurant and counted 14 large TVs! That includes the ones in the restrooms. Remember when we’d go eat a meal together and talk? I’m just saying.

It’s always a pleasure to have an interesting new place of the day and 9/18/2010 qualifies! My AAUW group went to the Tacoma Art Museum and were treated to a talk and tour by the director, Stephanie Stebich. The larger photo is of LeRoy, the dog and the smaller photo is of one of my favorite sculptures at the museum, the Stone Wave (untitled) by Richard Rhodes.

Here is an interesting youtube of the instillation of the Dale Chihuly’s floats in the sculpture.

Kobo Teriyaki

After a full week of work, I decided to stop for take out today 9/17/2010. The waitperson was delightful. The food was fairly standard and there was a great deal of it. We ate it while watching Letters to Juliet at home.

BTW Kobe is the sixth-largest city in Japan and a popular name for teriyaki restaurants. It is also a special cut of beef from a particular type of cattle.

Safeway Protor District

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

On 8/16/2010 I stopped at the Proctor Safeway on the way home from a meeting. The store has recently had a complete renovation and is now one of the nicest grocery stores in town. No doubt the renovation was at least partially inspired by the neighboring Metropolitan Market. The good points are nice employees, great produce & selection of products, a lovely store and an inside/outside fireplace. The downsides are the parking, which is somewhat limited (especially during busy times) and the store isn’t very large.

Theatre on the Square

Today 9/14/10 I stopped at Tacoma’s Theatre on the Square on my way home from work. This theater is part of the Broadway Center group of theaters including the Pantages and the Rialto. This building had previously housed the Tacoma Actor’s Guild.

University of Washington Tacoma

Happy Monday 9/13/10! Today I pulled into the University of Washington Tacoma, which is in Tacoma’s historic warehouse district. It’s an older photo, but today’s check in and new place of the day.

This link provides a great deal of information about the historic buildings in this district that houses the University of Washington, Tacoma’s School of the Arts, private businesses, a courthouse and museums (art, history, glass).

This space on Broadway is being used as a set for an indie film called Jesus 4 Less by local filmmaker Sarah Mangum of Aroma Productions. The interior represents a Christian bookstore that in the movie is being run by two atheists.

The space is being used as part of the Spaceworks project that puts temporary art in vacant Tacoma spaces. Check out their website for more art installations.
