Rainbow Over Kera 76 Station

Camp 6 Logging Camp, another victim of the economy

When we first moved to Tacoma over 20 years ago I remember visiting the Camp 6 Logging Exhibit in Point Defiance Park. Then, as in now, I love that this little slice of history had been preserved. Since that first time, I’ve gone back a couple of times a year, often seeing deer and once a fox. Once we took my young daughter on the Santa Train, which basically went into the forest a ways and then out again with, of course, Santa. It is an interesting, peaceful place. So it saddened me to learn that the exhibit might not reopen from its winter hiatus this year.

The Camp 6 Logging Camp’s website states “Our mission is to preserve and present to the public a portion of Washington State’s history from the 1880’s through the 1940’s as it pertains to the “Steam Era of Logging”. With photographs, paintings, artifacts and equipment displays, Camp 6 takes the visitor back in time from when horse and ox teams hauled out the timber up through the last days that steam powered “Donkeys” and Railroads worked the woods. Visitors will see first hand what life in the logging camps and woods of Western Washington was like.”

Target has all the sundry items I might want

I was in need of sundry items and was in the neighborhood of the Lakewood Target, so in I went.  The good things about Target are that it is always clean and fairly well staffed, their stock is refreshed regularly,  they have decent prices and a broad selection.  The not so good is that hardly anything they sell is made in America.

Marcato Condominiums, 1501 South Tacoma Avenue

I remember going through the Marcato Condominiums at 1501 Tacoma Avenue South a couple of years back when there was a big tour of many of the condominiums in Tacoma. This complex more than some of the others seemed to have a sense of community. I especially liked the mini movie theater. The complex was built in 2006 and at least the upper units have a lovely view of Mt. Rainier, as can be seen by photo below.

Sales data from the condo.com web site http://www.condo.com/Condo_TACOMA_98402_Reverie-at-Marcato-Condo_8168414/RecentSales indicates that in Unit 506 (790 sq.ft.) is currently available for sale with an asking price of $185,000. In January 2007 when the complex was new, the unit sold for $263,120, so the value has declined by about 30% (assuming that it sells for the asking price).

Prior to the condominium complex, this had been the site of a mixed use property, retail on the lower part and apartments on the upper level. The property was destroyed in a practice burn by the fire department on August 21, 2001. To see a photo of the prior building, go to:

Laundromat at Dusk

One of the true joys of home ownership is having a washer & dryer on the premises. I’ve used public laundromats in the past and would much rather do the laundry at home.  But if I needed to go to a public laudromat, this particular one is a good choice — new, bright and clean. I’ll keep it in mind when I need to wash something large, like a sleeping bag. The Laundromat apparently is called Laundromat and is located in Michael’s Plaza at 2913 South 38th Street in Tacoma.

Jason Lee Middle School

Today’s new place is Jason Lee Middle School at 602 North Sprague.
I went there to hear a relatively depressing Informational Budget Overview Community meeting.

The Jason Lee mascot is the bobcat. I remember when the school had a grand reopening in 2001 after a $27 million renovation. I also remember an article that suggested some people the students wouldn’t take care of the building. Well, a quick tour today proved that indeed the school looks great, clean and well maintained. The students that I talked to at the meeting were well mannered.

A very nice summary of the building’s history can be found on the school’s website.
