I dropped my dear daughter off at Washington State University to begin her adventures as a college student. Yes, that was just as hard as it sounds. While there, she told me that I could have one photo and that it would be in front of the book statue by the library. (She’s kind of bossy like that!). So it seemed appropriate on my dear daughter’s last full day with us for a while to go visit her old school to pick up her most excellent high school transcripts. School of the Arts (SOTA) has both administrative space and classrooms in the old Post Office.
The Columbia Basin College at 2600 N 20th Ave, Pasco, WA 99301 (in Franklin, my 11th Washington County!) is simple and attractive. My group meant in three of the building with the most interesting being the inside courtyard which had a tropical rainforest vibe going on with warm temperatures and an indoor pond. There is also a great sculpture of Martin Luther King, Jr. walking with a young, determined boy. The college’s mascot is the hawk.
The Edible Book Festival took place in the Collin Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound. My favorite was Jello Pages, which was covered in a cheerful yellow jello. It was all I could do not to tap it to see it wiggle 😀
Below are photos of the one day exhibit and some of the exhibits. The art includes Little Men (with small gingerbread men), Ketchup in the Rye, Who is Afraid of Virginia Ham and Moveable Feast (the banana). There is also a photo of the library (interior and exterior) and the bound periodicals entrance. The last one lead to an interesting conversation about old fashioned library practices. The library was constructed in 1954.
Jefferson Elementary School at 4302 N. 13th Street in Tacoma or originally built in 1906 and the new Jefferson was constructed in 2004.
I had an all day class at Park Avenue School at 6701 Park Avenue. The school was built in 1912 and Heath & Gove were the architects. There were additions to the original building in 1918, 1920, 1949, 1959. DeLong Elementary School is a neighborhood school located at 4901 South 14th Street, Tacoma. There mascot is a Dragon and their motto is “Preparing all students for a bright and productive future” .There are about 400 students enrolled.

University of Washington Tacoma’s Bookstore is the only bookstore in Tacoma that exclusively sells new books. People think of them as being primarily for student textbooks, but they have a bunch of great stuff including all types of books, art supplies, jewelery, scarfs and, of course, plenty of Huskies material. And there is a Starbucks adjoining. Just remember not to get lost in book store browsing and forget to pay the meter!

This cool, rainy Saturday dear daughter and I went off to the DuPont Holiday Bazaar, which was held at Pioneer Middle School http://www.steilacoom.k12.wa.us/Domain/9. My Facebook photographer friend, Kate Lynch, was there and I was so happy to meet her face to face. 🙂 The holiday bazaar had quality, interesting items for sale and the vendors seemed unusually, sincerely nice.
I hadn’t realized that schools in DuPont (ok, the only public school in DuPont) is part of the Steilacoom School District. It is a nice looking school and recently built.

My first place is Grant Center for the Expressive Arts at 1018 North Prospect Street in Tacoma. Their website states “At Grant, we use the expressive arts to promote excellence in all areas of academics. Students experience learning math, literacy, science and social studies through the visual arts, dance, drama and music.” The powered coated steel statue shown above was created by Mick Newham.It features four children involved with art (painting, ballet, acting and music).
