LeMay Car Museum

8292383887_ba67d206fa_nThe family took advantage of Art Walk night by going to the LeMay Car Museum at 2702 East D., Tacoma. This is the last time they will be participating in Art Walk and instead they have an initiative to put tickets into the hands of low income and military families. The museum was as wonderful in the inside as it looks from the outside It was good to listen to dear husband explaining the different cars to dear daughter. They had one of my first cars (a 1966 Mustang), a car I’d really like (a Mini Cooper) and my dream car (a gorgeous Jaguar).

Legendary Doughnuts

There is a new doughnut place in Tacoma, Legendary Doughnuts at 2602 Sixth Avenue. It opened about two weeks ago and every time I’ve been by they have had a crowd. But I went at an odd and relatively calm time and was delighted to see an old friend behind the counter! There was some confusion about my Groupon coupon, which said it had been used, but really, truly hadn’t been! Anyway, after we established my trustworthiness I ordered two dozen creative, tasty and unusual doughnuts. When I saw the size of the box, I knew the folks at my job weren’t go to be able to eat all of them. But within an hour they were all gone! I’m sure I’ll be back. The term horde of locusts came to mind. And everybody seemed to think they were delicious!

Downtown Tacoma’s Post Office

Today dear husband and I toured The historical post office at 1102 A Street, Tacoma. The tour was sponsored by Historic Tacoma http://www.historictacoma.org/ The property is a glorious three story plus basement building that was constructed as a federal building in 1910.The architect was James Knox Taylor. In 1992, the 2nd and 3rd floor courthouse space was vacated in 1992 when the courts moved to their current Union Station location. The tour included a jail cell, courtrooms, the Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) space, several large wall safes and a vacant postal area. We got to hear the vision for the property including commercial;retail space, perhaps a restaurant. The 72,000-square-foot building is listed on the city, state and national registers of historic places.

The Gardner Fountain at the University of Puget Sound

This lovely burbling fountain is located at the University of Puget Sound. Their website says “Commonly known as the Jones fountain, Hilton Bowen Gardner Memorial Fountain was added to campus during the 1967-68 academic year.  Mr. Gardner, who passed away in 1961, was university attorney and a member of the University of Puget Sound Board of Trustees.  Mr. Gardner’s wife and son both graduated from Puget Sound.”

Trilogy at Wright’s Park

Wright’s Park is very lovely this time of year with all of the fall colors, though it was breezy and rather cool. Today I took a stroll through the park and stopped to admire the 1978 bronze sculpture titled Trilogy by artist Larry Anderson. It is located on an island in a duck pond. Larry Anderson graduated from Tacoma’s Lincoln High School.

Save A Lot is Closing

At least nine Save A Lot Stores in the Puget Sound are closing including the one at 1105 Martin Luther King in Tacoma’s Hilltop. I remember in July 1999 when the building was a recently constructed as a Rite Aid drug Pharmacy. An entire block was demolished to make way for the Rite Aid. In January 2005 the Rite Aid closed and in September 2006 the Save-A-Lot Extreme Value Grocery Store opened.

Larsen Pharmacy had been on the site (or part of the site) as of 1938 and Harold Meyer Drug Store was there as of 1944. Kellogg & Ford Building was there as of 1905. The J. Anton Mueller store was there in 1916.

Cushman Substation

The Cushman Substation at 3717 South 19th Street in was built in 1926 and has a Greek Revival with Doric columns architectural style. Apparently it was noisy in the beginning because the newspaper stated “Engineers succeed in silencing noise at city
substation”. The station served as terminus for the power generated at Cushman Lake hydroelectric power project.
