MasaOn Friday afternoon, I stopped at Masa at 2811 Sixth Avenue for a happy hour with some friends. It was an excellent way to start the weekend šŸ˜€

Satellite Coffee is houses in the same space. I had stopped in there in January 2011.

Masa’s website is here

and their Facebook Page is here

Santa loves the Aloha Oasis Hawaiian Store

When Santa needs a break I’m sure he heads to the Aloha Oasis Hawaiian Store at 3011 Sixth Avenue, Tacoma. I stopped into after being stuck in the house for two days with a rotten cold. The store isn’t huge, but it is filled to the brim with all things Hawaiian including Hawaiian shirts, Christmas tree ornaments, candy, lotions, beach towels, bags, leis and trinkets. I left with chocolate covered macadamia nuts, dear husband’s favorite. The business has been going for nine years which is a great success in today’s economy!

Legendary Doughnuts

There is a new doughnut place in Tacoma, Legendary Doughnuts at 2602 Sixth Avenue. It opened about two weeks ago and every time I’ve been by they have had a crowd. But I went at an odd and relatively calm time and was delighted to see an old friend behind the counter! There was some confusion about my Groupon coupon, which said it had been used, but really, truly hadn’t been! Anyway, after we established my trustworthiness I ordered two dozen creative, tasty and unusual doughnuts. When I saw the size of the box, I knew the folks at my job weren’t go to be able to eat all of them. But within an hour they were all gone! I’m sure I’ll be back. The term horde of locusts came to mind. And everybody seemed to think they were delicious!

Great Gate at Viewcrest Terrace Apartments

Viewcrest Apartments at 601 S Jackson Ave (the southeast corner of Jackson and Sixth Avenue) in Tacoma has a wonderful, metal security gate featuring the sun and moon. The relatively small brick apartment complex (8,000 square feet) opened in April 1960.

Hola from the Portland Avenue Community Center

The Portland Avenue Community Center at 3513 E. Portland Avenue has a hidden mural on its free standing restroom building. It is a training building and has several different artists and styles and says a cheerful Hola (hello).

The Tacoma Mural WebsiteĀ Ā Ā  shows that the lead artists are Rachel Dotson, Jeremy Gregory, Joni Joachims, Kelda Martensen and Chris Sharp. The artist team is Dionne Bonner, Kate Cendejas, Larine Chung, Mike Corcoran, Brad Dinsmore, Shanna Duncan, Josh Everson, Jani Freimann, Jill Frey, Rajaa Gharbi, Kathleen Gray, Alexandra Kerl, Trinda Love, Jena Marks, Marlin Peterson, Brad Pugh, Tenold Sundberg, Asia Tail and Patricia Vazquez Gomez.

Goofy Goose

The Goofy Goose at 3702 6th AveĀ Ā Tacoma, WA 98406 is a Tacoma institution. I needed a place to stop for a bite before a meeting and cruised down Sixth Avenue. I didn’t want a chain restaurant or a fancy restaurant, and the Goofy Goose was just right. The man at the counter patiently went over all the options with me and I ordered the smaller cheeseburger meal, which was plenty of food and very tasty. Next time I think I’ll try their Teriyaki.

2nd Oldest McDonalds

The McDonald’s at 7217 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98408 has a duel entrance for their drive through. I assume that it helps the traffic flow and allows for even more customers. This location was the site of Tacoma’s second McDonald’s, built in 1963 and remodeled in 1977. I remember in 2005 they demolished the building and built the current structure which is larger, has more features and has the before mentioned double drive through.

And the folks behind the counter were super nice!
