Lake Union Crew

This is the amazing view (notice the Space Needle in the background) from the Lake Union Crew Building at 11 East Allison in Seattle. It wasn’t until I was writing it up as a new place that I realized the entire building was a boat and moves around as needed! That makes it one of the most amazing buildings I’ve ever been in! Here is somebody’s photo of it floating around. (Thanks znep!)

There were some great houseboats next to the Crew building and I’ve included a photo of them 🙂

South Tacoma Farmer’s Market

It is farmer’s market season and there is one available for most days of the week. Sunday’s market is the South Tacoma Farmer’s Market, the newest Tacoma market and it is located on the corner of Washington Avenue and South 56th in the Heritage Bank Parking Lot. It is a bustling market, with produce, flower’s, informational booths and art & crafts goods. I especially enjoyed the musicians playing.

Chickens are Beautiful!

Saturday we happily went on the Urban Chicken Coop Tour, organized by Garden Sphere in the Proctor District.  I’m considering the tour one large place!  We managed 8 or the 9 stops on the Tacoma tour and were so impressed with the graciousness, knowledge and openness of the owners and the good looks of the urban chickens!  While we don’t qualify for chickens ourselves because of our two terriers, I can certainly see the appeal.

The 21st Street Bridge

The 21st Street Bridge connects downtown Tacoma with the Port of Tacoma and is part of SR 509. The cable stay bridge was constructed in 1996 to replace the 11th Street Bridge (the Murry Morgan Bridge).

I was under the bridge (on the wrong side in this photo!) to attend an arts gathering which was fire dancers at the featured entertainment. How fun is that? Flair’s website is here:

Legendz is Open This Beautiful Day

There are two fast food places in Tacoma that I would travel to if I really had a craving for a burger and one of them is Legendz at 1201 South Sprague. It is exclusively a drive through with no indoor seating, though there are a couple of tables on the side of the building. For fast food, it is slow. That’s because they are actually waiting until one orders to make it. The burgers are really big and very tasty and thankfully they don’t publish the calorie count! Dear daughter had the fish burger and said it was also really good.

A few at a time, our group arrived at Shenanigan’s at 3017 Ruston Way
Tacoma, WA 98402. Just about the time we thought everyone had made it, another showed up! And to his credit, our wait person took it all in stride! My only complaint about the restaurant is that so much of the menu looked so good. And judging by our group of 13, it was all as good as it sounded! For me this is a once in a while kind of treat, but it was a great way to kick off the summer season (even though it was too chilly to sit on the deck!).

Shenanigan’s has been around since 1983 and there are two other locations, one in Spokane and the other in Boise, ID.

Beach Tavern

I’ve been to The Beach Tavern at 8612 6th Avenue once, a while back and remember enjoying my burger. It is the kind of place that is comfortable and has been around forever (since 1934). On side wall is a charming mural showing the nearby rail line.  The tavern’s setting, near Titlow Beach, is beautiful.

Good Service at Willamette Dental

Not every day is a park, a restaurant or a museum… some days are the dentist. And today was such a day for both my daughter and I. I have to say that the care has always been good for me at Williamette Dental, but as of late, their service has greatly improved. We got appointments for the same date/time and instead of having to wait for months, it took less than a week. And they are now providing reminder calls. I’m impressed! Our previous dentist moved on, but I really like the new one. So, altogether, not as much fun as many things, but not bad either.

Thorp Mill

On Sunday (I’m running a tad behind in my write ups!) we went to visit the Historic Thorp Mill in Thorp, WA, about 14 miles west of Ellensburg. I’ve always loved this historic mill but it is usually closed when I visit. This time, not only was it open, but there was a guide to take us through and explain everything. I wish I had gotten her name, because she was great! We learned that the mill was constructed in 1885. The farmers would bring their grain into the mill and the grain would go to the upper levels to be ground into various degrees of coarseness. Little scoops on a vertical conveyer belt took the grains up and gravity brought them back down. We also learned that the little town of Thorp was one of the first small towns to have electrical power because of the mill. Most importantly I was pleased that the two teens found it all so interesting!

Guided tours are available June through August. If you visit during the cooler months, there is a self guided tour around the building. There is no cost, but donations are gladly accepted.

Wiener Dogs and Windmills

Once in a while I go to two wonderful, new places in one day and I usually decide which one to blog about.  But Saturday’s two places are just so wonderful that I’m doing a double entry — Wiener Dogs and Windmills!

We went to Ellensburg for a quick get away and where delighted to find out that it was the 9th anniversary celebration of Dachshunds on Parade.  We got there late for the parade (next year!), but made it in time for the pet tricks and races.  Apparently Dachshunds have their own thoughts about if they should be racing.  There were races in which all of the dogs flew from one end of the track to the other.  There were races where the dogs got away from their owners before the ready-set-go and races where none of the dogs went anywhere (except maybe rolling over on their backs!).  One race, a dog ran right into the stands!  It was really a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours!  And I’ve never seen so many Dachshunds at once!

Afterward, we traveled about 15 miles outside of Ellensburg to the Wild Horse Wind Farm.  I’ve always wanted to see the wind turbines up close and they were glorious!  It was pretty windy when we got to the information center and the employees explained that they don’t give tours when the wind is over 25 miles per hour.  But still we looked all over the information center and got to touch one of the blades that they have at ground level and see the solar panels and hear the wonderful whomp, whomp, whomp of the blades as they turned.  The view was wonderful also.

All in all, it was a very successful day!
