The Russell Apartments at 1313 Fawcett Avenue have seen better days. They were built in 1929. Obviously they are in poor condition either awaiting demotion (most likely) or rehabilitation.
There are six western Washington El Toro restaurants and the one I visited on Tuesday night is the newest El Toro, located at 12115 Canyon Road East, Puyallup, WA. Information about the small chain can be found here.
Last time I was in this space, I purchased fish. But now it is a Limeberry ready to provide frozen yogurt (froyo) to adoring masses. Limeberry is located at 7304 Lakewood Dr W, Lakewood, WA 98499 in the space that had been occupied by Johnny’s Seafood.
Update 7/2015 – Limeberry is gone and the space is again available for lease.
The Union Station Link Stop is situated on the median on in the center of Pacific Avenue between South 19th and South 21st Street in the Museum District in proximity of the University of Washington, Tacoma Branch and Tacoma’s School of the Arts. Presently the Link runs 1.6 miles, though there are expansion plans. The public art in the foreground represents shipbuilding in the area’s past. Below is another photo of the station and a few other near by shots.
There is a new restaurant in the Lincoln District in the previous Jubilee place. It is the Amp Coffee House and Frozen Yogurt, 858 S. 38th St., Tacoma and its been open for a couple of months. I finally stopped in and was impressed at how much it has changed, looking more like a sleek coffee shop that it is and less like a hamburger joint that it was. I ordered a Philly Cheese steak (a real treat) and next time I’m going for a Smitty Burger. I hear there are plans for a drive through and a patio.
The Jubilee sign will be removed as soon as it is feasible.
Their Facebook page can be found here.
The Toynbee Floral Co. has been vacant for some time. I found a photo from 2012 in which it looked much the same as above. And I find no other mention of it during a quick web search. I love the painted storefront windows with my favorite detail being that the blinds on the window to the left are also paint!
The newest Starbucks in Tacoma is at 3401 South 23rd Street, Tacoma (the corner of South 23rd and Union Avenue in the center with Walmart). I stopped on the way to a meeting and went through the drive in though there is a seating area. The entrance was a little confusing to me, but maybe it was just the early hour. The line was long and Starbucks computer went down which slowed things down even more, but I’m sure they will work out the bugs.
Dear husband and I were in search of lunch when we noticed Sammy’s Pizza at 1308 North ‘I’ Street, Tacoma. The restaurant had previously been under the Garlic Jim’s franchise and on Sixth Avenue, but now it is independent. The original intent was to have a liquor license and there is even a bar in place, but proximity to the local elementary school is problematic and as of our visit, beer and wine were not available. The restaurant is named after the owner’s dog. We had the special, which was a large meatball pizza and it was tasty.
Jersey Mike’s Subs has newly opened at 3555 Market Place, Suite 4, University Place, WA 98466. I hadn’t heard of the chain before, despite the fact they have over 1,300 locations! The first Jersey Mike’s was in Point Pleasant, NJ in the 1970s not too far from where I had my annual Jersey Shore summer family vacation. Anyway this location is a good new place for dear husband and I to pick up a cheese steak or a sub. There are also Jersey Mike’s in Gig Harbor and Puyallup.
Before my book group on Monday, I ate at Pho Than Brothers at 1712 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98402. This chain of restaurants got its start in 1996 in North Seattle. There are 18 locations, all in the Puget Sound area. Dinner includes delicious pho and included a cream puff. I’m sure this location serves students from both Tacoma’s School of the Arts, University of Washington Tacoma and visitors to the near by history, arts and glass museums.
