Moore Branch Tacoma Public Library

Today I ran into the Grace R. Moore Branch of Tacoma Public Library at 215 South 56th Street to pick up a book (Poser: My Life in Twenty-three Yoga Poses). The library’s webpage says “Coming to the pioneering community of Tacoma in 1884, Grace Moore missed the easy access to books she enjoyed in her native San Francisco. In 1886, Mrs. Moore led a group of 18 women to organize a circulating library in her South Tacoma home. The club’s charter members donated their personal collections of books and patrons paid 25 cents for the privilege of borrowing from the Puget Sound area’s first circulating library. Bachelors, wishing to use the home as a quiet place to read, paid 50 cents.” http://www.tpl.lib.wa.us/Page.aspx?nid=55

Krispy Kreme

About once a year or so, dear daughter and I stop at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts by the Tacoma Mall. I remember when Krispy Kreme came to Washington State. I dragged my dear husband up to Issaquah to check them out! We must have stood in line for almost an hour, but it was like a party with everybody happy and visiting. Of course, it didn’t hurt that they handed out warm, fresh doughnuts to everybody in line! Now that there are 8 locations in Washington State the novelty has gone away.

This afternoon when we stopped at our local Kripy Kreme, there were only two other customers in line, a father and his wide eyed son. But the doughnuts are still good and I look forward to next year when we go again!

Seems like whenever we have out of town company I take them on the FIve Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park. Today’s new place is the Vashon Island Viewpoint, which not surprisingly provides a lovely view of Vashon Island. While there we ran into the usual suspects.

I didn’t realize that Bertolino Bros. Coffee at 2421 South Union in the Tacoma Central Shopping Center was open 24/7 until I made a quick stop. Good to know. I don’t usually have blended drinks, but the green tea cream just looked so good that I gave in. This family owned and run business has a wonderful feel about it and the staff and food are great.

Tacoma Central Police Substation

Today I took a quick stop at the Tacoma Central Police Substation, Sector One at 1524 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.  What attracted me to the building was the stones in a metal cage art, of which there are at least three.  I’m not finding information on them, though they seem to be designed to be educational.  I did find this document about other art at local police stations.

Bank of America, doing the right thing?

I’ve been hearing that Bank of America isn’t paying its fair share (any?!) of taxes. I don’t know the truth of the story, but across the country there are demonstrations to protest BOA’s tax paying practices. I’ll be listening for more information. In the meantime, today’s new place is the Bank of America near the Tacoma Mall.

The Price of Getting Around

I was riding around on fumes today when I pulled into the Shell Station at 5744 N 26th St., at N. 26th Street and Pearl Street. I paid $3.95 per gallon for the regular gas and that seemed expensive to me, though at the time I didn’t complain because I was so happy to have gas back in the car!

That made me think about gas prices and I found this website that provides the gas prices within cities or zip codes. Per the site, the average gas price in Tacoma and Washington State is $3.90 per gallon and in the US the average is $3.80 per gallon. The site also has a trip calculator and an interesting 72 month average price chart. Nope, it’s not my imagination, gas is high right now!

For a little spring color

I made a quick stop today at Lowes at 7905 South Hosmer Street, Tacoma to pick up some flowers to put in pots on the front porch.

They were pretty busy for the middle of a weekday and that made me wonder if the home improvement stores are doing well. Apparently, based on this article in the LA Times, yes they are.

Tacoma Boys in Puyallup

IMG_0180_edited-1 by Gexydaf

I’ve been wanting to see the newest Tacoma Boys, the one in the South Hill portion of Puyallup. It is much like its sister stores, the one on 6th Avenue in Tacoma and the other on Lakewood Drive in Lakewood. As always, they have excellent produce, a lovely assortment of specialty items and friendly staff.
