University Place Shari’s is gone

20120817-192502.jpgShari’s at 3902 Bridgeport Way, University Place 98466 became vacant in March 2012 when the company did not renew their lease. Apparently the site was going to be used as a bank, but now its future is in question and it remains vacant. An article on the closure can be found here: http://blog.thenewstribune.com/business/2012/03/21/sharis-restaurant-in-university-place-closes-plans-for-building-unclear/

Peace Be Upon You

The Islamic Center of Tacoma is located at 2010 Bridgeport Way, University Place. I thought I’d find a bit more about them on the internet, but their website is down. Their Facebook page is here.

The Tacoma Public Library’s Northwest Room indicates that this is the second Islamic Center in Washington. The stucco building was constructed in 1981 and dedicated in 1982.

My World Childcare

My World Childcare at 5915 Orchard Street is closed, but their wonderful mural remains! I didn’t find much about the business except that their motto was “Helping your child discover their world”. But really the story here is the vivid mural featuring children playing, reading and working. I hope whoever leases the building next appreciates the artwork and lets it remain.

Not All Heroes Wear Capes (Hallmark)

So I stopped at McBride’s Hallmark at 3822 Bridgeport Way, University Place today to buy a father’s day card and took these two photos. I planned to go inside and take lots of interesting photos, but I was overwhelmed with interesting cards and forgot! What can I say? Hallmark’s website is here http://www.hallmark.com/online/

Starbucks in University Place, will it snow?

They tell me there is a big old snow storm coming, though when I snapped this photo the skies were mostly blue. I needed some provisions (cookies, chips, milk, cheese) and stopped at Trader Joe’s and then for a cup of drip coffee at Green Fir’s Starbucks. It was packed and there was no inconspicuous way to take a photo, so I took one of the outside and it was truly awful! I mean really, really bad. So, here is a photo that I do like of one of the trees in the Green Firs Center. Now let’s see if we actually get this huge storm!

UPS was a good experience

UPS

I hate mailing boxes around the holidays. I hate the crowds and the waiting and the cost. I hate that I’m always sending when it is questionable about if the box will make it there in time. But there I was again.

After work I sat in the car and made sure that all of the presents were in the boxes I found and taped them up. I was thinking I’d go to the UPS on South 38th near the mall, but then I remembered there was a UPS in Green Firs Shopping Center in University Place. Worth a try. I drove past the Post Office on South 27th and there was a line to get into the parking lot to get in line to mail boxes. Wonderful (that was sarcasm). Onward to UPS. When I got there the lot was crowded, but I found a space pretty quickly. I went in and there were only two workers. Each one had a customer and there was one other lady in front of me. I couldn’t believe my luck! I was in and out in under 10 minutes and shipping was less then I expected. I checked online and both boxes are due to be delivered by Tuesday. I could have spent an extra $25 to have them delivered on Monday, but no need. I celebrated by going over to Trader Joe’s for some holiday goodies to share. I’m so glad the shipping is over. Next year I’ll do it earlier for sure and I’ll definitely go back to UPS in Green Firs!

Sunset Terrace Park is Closed Today

Sunset Terrace Park at the corner of South 19th Street and Seaview (1902 Seaview Street) in University Place. The 2.25 acre site has a new children’s play area, open space. a picnic pavilion and a ball field. When I stopped by the park, it was closed to have its Asarco Copper Smelter arsenic contaminated soils cleaned under a contract awarded by the Department of Ecology.

One of the best views around

As we dip into the second half of August, I find myself trying to squeeze in as much summer as possible before the rain and cool weather returns. Today dear daughter and I took the loop trail around the Chambers Bay Golf Course. The loop consists of two trails, the 1.25 mile Grandview Trail and the 2 mile Soundview Trail. The Grandview Trail is pretty much flat and looks out over over the Chambers Bay Golf Course and Bay. We were pretty happy to see a quick little Garter snake slipping through the grass on the upper level! The Soundview Trail is pretty level along the railroad tracks and water, but rather steep going up and down! Going counter clockwise, facing the bay, the Soundview Trail starts in a lovely forested area and then goes along the railroad track. Further on there are the remains of the industrial use of the property and then there is the open and extra steep hill going back up. Where the trails meet there is the clubhouse restaurant, where we had a lovely lunch before heading back to the car.

Fred Meyer has pretty much everything!

While reading over the Sunday paper, I noticed that Fred Meyer at 6305 South Bridgeport was having a sale that included a tech gadget I had been needing. And I also needed groceries and the kid was demanding new sheets (something about a huge hole in hers!). Luckily Fred Meyer’s seems to have it all. The Fred Meyer in University Place is a newer building and is well maintained. Its a bit further for me to drive, but seems worth it to me.

UP Library

Today I finally went to the new Pierce County Library at 3609 Market Place W. University Place, WA 98466. What a welcoming library it is! It is, the layout is open with lovely light (on a rainy day). I’m not use to self checkout, but it was so easy to grab the book I had on hold and scan away. I especially like how the space flows into the entry area. Based on the number of patrons, other folks are also enjoying the space.
