Hula Girls Coffee Company

Hula Girls Coffee Company at 1901 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma, is a wonderful alternative to Starbucks. It’s been in place at the 76th Station for about a year and in April 2012 was painted a bright, cheery yellow that really makes it stand out! The owner was friendly, the coffee (Kealas Hawaiian) was really good, their prices were righteous and they had pastries from Corina’s Bakery and that is always a sign of quality. I’m sure I’ll be back.

Goofy Goose

The Goofy Goose at 3702 6th Ave  Tacoma, WA 98406 is a Tacoma institution. I needed a place to stop for a bite before a meeting and cruised down Sixth Avenue. I didn’t want a chain restaurant or a fancy restaurant, and the Goofy Goose was just right. The man at the counter patiently went over all the options with me and I ordered the smaller cheeseburger meal, which was plenty of food and very tasty. Next time I think I’ll try their Teriyaki.

Classic Coffee

A little ways back I purchased a Living Social coupon for Classic Coffee at 7609 Custer Road in Lakewood. It was a buy a $20 coupon for $10 coupon and today I stopped to pick up fruit smoothies for dear daughter and me.

Freeze

Freeze Frozen Yogurt at 3806 Bridgeport Way West (Green Firs Shopping Center), University Place, WA has been around for about six months and the employees (owner?) was friendly. They have ten flavors (Mango Tango, Alpine Vanilla, Pomegranate Raspberry, Thin Mint,Cake Batter, Milk Chocolate, Hawaiian Pineapple, Sweet Coconut,Cheesecake and Lemon Bar) at any one time and a nice assortment of toppings.

On the way home this little girl was wandering around in the street, stopping traffic. How could I leave her there? So I scooped her up and brought her home. After an hour or so the owner called me back and we took her home. She was a very sweet dog, but growled at our two pups.

Update: June 2015. There is a sign up at Freeze that says they are closed because of mechanical issues, but the sign has been up for a while and I wonder if they are just closed.

2nd Oldest McDonalds

The McDonald’s at 7217 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98408 has a duel entrance for their drive through. I assume that it helps the traffic flow and allows for even more customers. This location was the site of Tacoma’s second McDonald’s, built in 1963 and remodeled in 1977. I remember in 2005 they demolished the building and built the current structure which is larger, has more features and has the before mentioned double drive through.

A Moveable Feast

Dear daughter, her dear friend and I had to go to Tacoma’s first Movable Feast, a gathering of food trucks mostly from around the region. It was great. The location in the parking lot of Cheney Stadium was convenient and parking was plentiful. I had 1/2 a pulled pork sandwich, daughter had a burrito and her friend had curry. Then we had strawberry shortcake (only it was really strawberry on a split doughnut) and amazingly good ice cream from Ice Cream Social.

Pagliacci Pizza

I had a late meeting at the Starbucks on the Ave near the University of Washington in Seattle. Afterwards I stopped at one of my very favorite pizza places, Pagliaco Pizza. at 4529 University Way NE, Seattle. I love this restaurant because I can order a good size sliced and not an entire pie. They also have some great salads. I got a slice of margarita pizza and a vitamin water for just over $4. What a deal. Pigliaco has 22 locations. It would be great if they opened up a location in Tacoma!

Gibson’s Westgate

Gibson’s Frozen Yogurt at Westgate, 5916 North 26th Street, Tacoma, opened in May about a year after the original Gibson’s opened in the Stadium District. It has the same wonderful yogurt as the Stadium location and it also features Corina Bakery pastries, Valhalla Coffee and Mad Hat Tea — all local companies. This location has more extensive outside seating and the interior is more spacious.

Dear daughter and I sampled almost all of the flavors before going with the Pistachio and I also had some fresh blueberries and raspberries. Dear daughter went with the classic rainbow sprinkles.  Their other flavors this week included  Alpine Vanilla, Dark Chocolate, Euro-Tart, Peach Mango Tart, Very Strawberry, Mango Tango sorbet, Very Berry sorbet, NSA Raspberry, Red Velvet, Cake Batter and Cookies & Cream!

Their Facebook Page is here http://www.facebook.com/Gibsons.Yogurt.Westgate

And their website is here http://www.gibsonsyogurt.com/

This location has previously been a Little Caesar’s Pizza http://blog.firsttries.com/?p=1286 and before that it was a shoe store.

Tacos Guaymas Family Mexican Food

I didn’t realize that Tacos Guaymas Family Mexican Food at 2630 South 38th Street, Tacoma was a chain of ten and I also didn’t realize that it had a drive through. What I did know is that they have really good food that is reasonably priced and plentiful. Dear daughter and I went through the take out lane and purchased dinner (a bean & cheese burrito for her and tortilla soup for me).
