DQ – Grill & Chill

There was a mutiny in our household today! We were driving home from a friends house and I was trying to think of a convenient, interesting place to stop for my new place of the day.  Dairy Queen yells my daughter and just like that we’re off to Dairy Queen! Fine, just fine, Dairy Queen it is.  This particular Dairy Queen is located at 2110 Mildred Street West, Tacoma.  The small chocolate dipped vanilla cone I ended up with had 330 calories, which was less than I would have guessed.

Per Wikipedia, the state with the most Dairy Queens is Texas, which makes sense since it is a large, often hot state. As of last year, there were more than 5,700 Dairy Queen locations in 19 countries. The legal name has been DQ since 2001. The parent company that owns DQ also owns Orange Julius.

Pita Pit, for potentially healthy meals

Somehow it got to be 8 pm and dear daughter and I had missed dinner. She wanted to go to Jack in the Box, but I talked her into Pita Pit at 212 Garfield Street near Pacific Lutheran University. In retrospect, we should have shared a pita because they are pretty big. But we didn’t. I had one with turkey and ham (lettuce, spinach, sprouts, mushrooms, red onion and some kind of garlic sauce) and the kid had a breakfast one with eggs, potatoes and cheese). Both were good. This Pita Pit is open until 10 most nights (midnight Friday and Saturday), which is great for the PLU students. They also deliver locally.

While Pita Pit is a relatively small chain, compared to Jack in the Box, it looks like they have locations in the vast majority of the states, with approximately 24 locations in Washington State.

Vien Dong in Tacoma’s Lincoln District

Wow! Vien Dong at 3801 Yakima Avenue in Tacoma’s Lincoln District has some tasty Vietnamese food and so reasonably priced. I was delighted (delighted, I tell you!) to meet a dear friend here for the first time. We both had the #11 (pho) with a fresh spring roll. It was the best pho I’d ever had and there was so very much of it that I had enough for lunch today. It says a lot for a restaurant when it is still very busy at 2 in the afternoon. The restaurant itself isn’t fancy, but the food makes it worth the trip.

Legendz is Open This Beautiful Day

There are two fast food places in Tacoma that I would travel to if I really had a craving for a burger and one of them is Legendz at 1201 South Sprague. It is exclusively a drive through with no indoor seating, though there are a couple of tables on the side of the building. For fast food, it is slow. That’s because they are actually waiting until one orders to make it. The burgers are really big and very tasty and thankfully they don’t publish the calorie count! Dear daughter had the fish burger and said it was also really good.

El Paraiso Fish Tacos & Mexican Food

El Paraiso Fish Taco & Mexican Food at 2510 84th Street in Lakewood had been on my to do list ever since I read a review in the Tacoma News Tribune.

Today we had some time to spend before a movie so we stopped in and had the fish tacos. They were indeed very tasty and also reasonably priced. The setting isn’t fancy, but that is more than offset by the food, the price and the friendly staff.  And, if you are curious, Paraiso translates to Paradise!

Fine Dining at the Taco Bus

Fine Dining at the Taco Bus by Gexydaf

Dear daughter wanted Mexican food and I wanted a new place of the day. Taqueria El Grande at 7202 South Park Avenue had caught my eye earlier because, well its a bus and the building next to it is an amazing orange color. But we had never been in and were surprised to discover that customers actually go into the bus. It was very clean and I loved all the chrome. The woman who took our order was really nice and service was fast. We could have eaten there, but we got it to go. One of the other customers was telling me that she only brings her closest friends to the Taco Bus and it was the only Mexican food that she would eat in Tacoma. I can see why, it really was pretty darned good. We’ll be back!

I haven’t gone into this store in forever because, to be honest, it doesn’t feel completely safe to me especially in the evening. But the drive through is fine and the drive through workers are friendly and do a good job.

Yikes! Jack In The Box now has the calorie count

I try not to go to fast food restaurants very often, but I was taking a class today and only had an hour for lunch and there was travel time involved. So, Jack in the Box it is! Oh my, they are putting the number of calories next to each menu item! Yikes! So, I guess the bacon ultimate cheeseburger (920 calories), curly fries (280 calories) and a large mint oreo cookie shake (1,310 calories) are out!

I must say that Jack In The Box does have a pretty amusing website!

Peanut Sauce Thai

After a long day, I stopped at Peanut Thai for some delicious take out. My dear daughter has had a cough and she thought that maybe some spicy food would help. If only she would order something that that was indeed spicy! But it tasted good. The adults both liked the fried avocado and the pad thai and sizzling chicken were also delightful.
