Good Service at Willamette Dental

Not every day is a park, a restaurant or a museum… some days are the dentist. And today was such a day for both my daughter and I. I have to say that the care has always been good for me at Williamette Dental, but as of late, their service has greatly improved. We got appointments for the same date/time and instead of having to wait for months, it took less than a week. And they are now providing reminder calls. I’m impressed! Our previous dentist moved on, but I really like the new one. So, altogether, not as much fun as many things, but not bad either.

Syd’s Shoe Repair

Syd’s Shoe Repair is housed in a very small building at 4605 Pacific Avenue in Tacoma. The 420 sq.ft. structure was constructed in 1925 and renovated in 1975.

There aren’t many places to have your shoes fixed nowadays. Most of us wear our shoes until they have a problem or we’re tired of them and then we buy new.

Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital

Mary Bridge by Gexydaf

I had a lovely time at the benefit at the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma. The hospital itself is a lovely space with art to make you smile and a splendid garden.

The event there this evening was the Strawberries Festival sponsored by the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. More information about this fine group can be found here. http://www.multicare.org/marybridge?gclid=CJqAlL_L0qgCFRtKgwodHgqTgQ

Bank of America, doing the right thing?

I’ve been hearing that Bank of America isn’t paying its fair share (any?!) of taxes. I don’t know the truth of the story, but across the country there are demonstrations to protest BOA’s tax paying practices. I’ll be listening for more information. In the meantime, today’s new place is the Bank of America near the Tacoma Mall.

Searching for a Signal

I’ve gone past the Del Norte Hill Antenna Site at 1423 S. Grant, Tacoma, plenty of times and have on occasion wondered what it was. Apparently a traditional residence at one point, the property is now devoted to an FCC registered, 39.6 meter (130 feet) antenna structure. The total height is 42.7 meters (140 feet). The sign on the building states that tower space is available.

Finally, Spring (at the parking lot at corner of S. 15th & Court D)

Driving around today deciding on my new place of the day I finally saw my first sign of Spring! Yes! There is hope! Here in the Republic Parking Northwest Lot ($2/hour, $8/all day) there were several cherry trees blooming their cheery pink blooms. I took a couple of shots with my regular camera, as well as with the Hipstamatic app on my phone http://hipstamaticapp.com/

This particular parking lot is located at 1517 Fawcett Avenue, Tacoma, which is the Southeast corner of Fawcett Avenue and South 15th Street.

15th Street Cleaners, Five Stars

There are many dry cleaners in Tacoma, but only three have been awarded five stars (the highest) by the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department for their environmental stewardship and their outreach and education. A more complete write up can be found here:

The 15th Street Cleaners is located at 1352 South Fawcett Avenue, Tacoma, WA.

The Tacoma Public Library has this cryptic note about the property that was there prior to the current building. TNT (Tacoma News Tribune) 11/10/1948 p.1 Asphyxiated in his office (apt. of Wm. H. Holloway).

Ford Building and Crescent Ballroom

The Ford Building and Crescent Ballroom have always been a mystery to me. They are located on the edge of downtown, but not on a main drag and have been beautifully restored. According to the Tacoma Public Library the Ford Building portion of the structure was built in 1918 with E.J. Bresemann as the architect. The building originally housed the Manley-Thompson Ford Agency.

The Auditorium (that was its original name) had opened January 11, 1922. The Gothic structure was designed by Roland Borhek. It was the home to many dances, as well as appearances by such diverse performers as Rudolph Valentino, Duke Ellington, Paul Revere and The Raiders, Soundgarden and Nirvana. In 1931, the two buildings were remodeled, combined and renamed the Crescent Ballroom. This part of the property now functions as a warehouse. The mirrored ball from the original ballroom has been restored and now hangs in the South Park Community Center.

The importance of the Crescent Ballroom can be gleaned here.

TRA Medical Imaging purchased the property in 2007 for $2,500,000, and after considerable renovation opened it as their administrative office in July 2008.

Nature’s Resource Center

I’d read about the new tenant at Freighthouse Square and since we were having dinner at Wendy’s Vietnamese, I thought I skip downstairs and check it out. Nature’s Resource Center’s website says “Here at NATURES RESOURCE CENTER we strive to meet your medical needs in a variety of ways including; providing educational service on cultivating one’s own personal herb plants, We also have an inventory of starts, hash, edibles, tinctures and the best medical herb nature has to offer. All consultations and services provided in a safe and professional setting. So stop suffering today and enjoy the greatest medical cannabis nature has to offer at Nature’s Resource Center!”

Their website is at http://nrc420.com/

And their address is at 602 East 25th Street, Suite #78

I wasn’t sure what I expected, but the storefront has dignity and an attractive waiting area. I purposefully didn’t photograph anyone coming or going, but they looked like everyday kind of folks. I understand that they sell medical marijuana (cannabis), but I personally don’t see it being a problem being next to a store specializing in legos.

Saint Joseph Medical Center

In the twilight I stopped to take a quick cell phone photo of 320 bed St. Joe’s. I like the unusual shape of the main building and the glowing red lights along the top. The address of the building is 1717 S. J St., Tacoma, WA 98405.
