Red Mural on Barrier Blocks

11914588524_de7eff5609_bOne has to look hard for the mural on the barrier blocks at 5699 Pipeline Road East, Tacoma. But they are worth the Eastside search with their bold, red color and jaunty graphics. My favorite barrier (if one can have a favorite barrier) is the one with the word ‘Adventure’ on it! The artists are Natalie Oswald, K. Candejas, Y. Simone and J. Warren. The Tacoma Murals Project mural was created in 2012. The top photo shows the barriers as they sit and the bottom photo shows them Photoshopped side by side.

Seahawks House, Tacoma

11847286423_c2079e533b_h(1)It took me a beat to realize why some folks have left their holiday lights up when I realized they are in Seahawks blue and green. Oh, I get it! The Seahawks play in the NFL Second Round Playoffs against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday. Go hawks!

Happiness is around the next corner, Wendy’s Vietnamese

HappinessHappiness is around the next corner, wealth down the street” is what my fortune cookie said at Wendy’s Vietnamese at 5015 Tacoma Mall Boulevard, Tacoma. We met our dear friend at Wendy’s for a tasty dinner and conversation. This is Wendy’s second location, with the first being in Freighthouse Square. Their food is consistently delicious.

B Sharp Coffee House, Tacoma

11786807823_ff83d5f714_bB Sharp Coffeehouse at 706 Opera Alley is delightful. They offer coffee, lunch fare, beer and wine, as well as music many evenings. The space has a wonderful history as being the original location of the News Tribune. It is lower level space with no natural light except at the very front, but that just adds to its cozy ambiance, I was particularly charmed by the large open area leading to the restrooms. There is a mural of dogs playing poker made me smile, especially since the cairn on the right (cheating) looks much like one of our dogs. B Sharp’s has a website and a Facebook Page.

Spanaway Lake, the last day of 2013

11678596936_a43ee371af_hI wanted some place pretty for the last day in 2013, so I made my dear husband go out to Spanaway Lake in the light Northwest rain. I find it amazing that I had never been there before. During the warmer months it is possible to rent row boats and canoes at the boathouse. The lake encompasses 280 acres and a maximum depth of 28 feet and a mean depth of 16 feet.

Vinotique in University Place

Wine & CheeseVinotique at 7304 Lakewood Drive West in Lakewood, is in the same center as Tacoma Boys. Per the owner, they are in their 25th year of operations! They have a wonderful wine selection and plenty of cheeses, but what I didn’t expect is that they serve deli meals. On Friday nights they serve tapas. Their website is here and their Facebook page is here.

Update: Toward the end of 2014, Vinotique’s owners retired and the store closed.

pee weeThe Pee Wee Tavern at 7052 Pacific Avenue is a freestanding building that was just over 1,000 square feet. It is available for either sale or lease. The building was constructed in 1947 and was originally known as the Log Tavern or The Log.

The Tiger at Zoolights

11471488994_e2bb98b9e1_bZoolights at has a new tiger light and its spectacular. We had a perfect Zoolights evening, not too cold, no rain and light crowds. While we were there, we checked out the aquarium and of course the other lights.

Snowman at Noel’s House of Bricks

11413153073_1e7da25d2d_hNoel’s House of Bricks at Freighthouse Square has a darling snowman in their window. The space is at 2501 E D st Tacoma Wa #46 and they recently opened for business. I was there just before the center closed and House of Bricks wasn’t open, as they clearly stated on their Facebook Page. This is their second location with the first being in Olympia.

Vacant Lot on South 38th Street & Pacific Avenue

11198720725_0c5214c881_bDarn it was cold today, so I had a very quick stop to photo the vacant lot on the southeast corner of Pacific Avenue and South 38th Street. I remember when there was a building on the large lot, office space I think. Somebody demolished the buildings and there were plans to building something, maybe a drugstore? Anyway, its been vacant for years now. Maybe now that the Northwest corner is being redeveloped, this lot too will see new life. One can hope.
