Rainbow Over Kera 76 Station

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

I wasn’t planning on using this gas station as my new place of the day, but the rainbow suggested that I change my mind. This is the Kera 76 Station at 1901 Martin Luther King Junior Way, Tacoma, WA 98405-3835. It has a food market. The building was constructed in 1988.

Laundromat at Dusk

One of the true joys of home ownership is having a washer & dryer on the premises. I’ve used public laundromats in the past and would much rather do the laundry at home.  But if I needed to go to a public laudromat, this particular one is a good choice — new, bright and clean. I’ll keep it in mind when I need to wash something large, like a sleeping bag. The Laundromat apparently is called Laundromat and is located in Michael’s Plaza at 2913 South 38th Street in Tacoma.

Save Our Buses, Proposition 1

I don’t usually take the bus. Sure, on occasion, maybe to the Puyallup Fair or when my car is in for repair. But my daughter does and she is afraid service will be significantly reduced if Proposition 1 doesn’t pass during the Pierce County general election on February 8, 2011. Pierce Transit (the folks that run the buses) receives 70% of its funding from local sales tax and because of the recession, sales tax is down. Fair increases, reductions in routes and layoffs have already occurred, but if Proposition 1 does not pass, an additional 35% of the current level of service will be eliminated.

What is the financial impact to my family? On a $10 purchase, we will pay an additional $0.03. What is the real cost impact? My teen daughter will wait longer for bus service, sometimes on dark, cold, rainy evenings. And for other folks? It will be harder to go to their jobs, the doctor, daycare and the grocery store. Like my daughter, folks will have longer waits between buses. Some of these people (those without cars, those with disabilities, etc.) have no other choice.

So my family voted yes for Proposition 1. It just seemed like the right thing to do for the most people.

Today’s new place is the Lakewood Transit Center, near the Lakewood Town Center shopping area.

Columbia Veterinary Hospital

Columbia Veterinary Hospital

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

I was in the market for a vet to handle the medical needs of my two pups. My last vet retired and closed up shop and I wasn’t too keen on the mega-vet I went to before that. It use to be that people usually went to the closest vet (or dry cleaner, or hair dresser, etc.), but nowadays we search for reviews. That’s what I did, I looked on Yelp and eliminated some vets with less than stellar recommendations. That lead me to Columbia Veterinary Hospital at 5916 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98406-2016 (253) 564-7927 .

http://www.columbiavet.com/

It is a relatively small building and four veterinarians are listed as working here. They really seemed to love the animals and were good with them. My dog (unloyal animal that she is) would have happily stayed! They were kind enough to clip her nails, I job I truly hate! And the bill was somewhat less than I expected. So, all in all a good experience.

We topped it off with a trip to PetSmart for a new collar. I’m pretty sure the dog that I took went home and gloated to the dog that stayed home this time!

Allstar Fitness

I had no excuse not to go to the gym today, so off I went. I was too late to take the class I wanted, but I worked the machines for a while and felt like I accomplished something. The building has over 70,000 square feet and includes a pool/hot tub/saunas, class spaces, plenty of exercise machines, a woman’s only workout area, a child care spot, a rock climbing area and an Emerald City Smoothie.

And the link for AllStar is http://www.allstarfitness.com/

The link for Emerald City Smoothie is http://www.emeraldcitysmoothie.com/ViewStore.aspx?store=3e704783-47b3-4067-84d9-bda8f59396a8

As a side note, I remember going to see movies at this location when I first moved to Tacoma. Then the movie theater failed and Allstar purchased the building and complete remodeled it. They really did a top notch job with the remodel!

The other photo is of the sunset tonight. I was pretty excited to see that it was after 5 and the sunset was in progress. I guess the days are getting longer.

4″ Shorter, 2 shades darker

Today’s new place is Salon Mosaic for a new do! This salon has been open since the fall and is a lovely space with talented, experienced stylists. I recommend it.

Salon Mosaic
(253) 564-5198
614 Regents Blvd, Fircrest, WA 98466

This is my first new place in the city of Fircrest. Per CityData.com Fircrest has a population of 6,278 as of July 2009 and the median household income is $68,002. The population density is 4022 people per square mile. 91.4% of the population over 25 have a high school degree or higher.

Using the same site, I compared that information to Tacoma which has a population of 193,566 and a median household income of $48,673. Tacoma’s population density is 3,986 people per square mile and 83.6% of the population have a high school degree or higher. These are interesting differences for side by side cities!

Here is a photo of Salon Mosaic’s lovely restroom!

Per the union’s website they represent Atlantic, Gulf, Lakes and Inland Waters District/NMU, AFL-CIO, unlicensed United States merchant mariners sailing aboard U.S.-flag vessels in the deep sea, Great Lakes and inland trades. The union also represents licensed U.S. mariners in the Great Lakes and inland sectors.

The building was constructed in 1962 and was originally the National Bank of Washington.

While we were up on the 4th Floor for an allergy appointment, we enjoyed the lovely view!  For the record, we have always been impressed with the level of care that we have received from Group Health.

Pink Elephant Through the Link’s Window on New Year’s Eve

Originally uploaded by Gexydaf

Usually I take my new place of the day photos after work, but today I stayed late and found a wind storm outside when I left. So the new place of the day is an older photo, though I did check in today.

This shot of the Elephant Car Wash was taken on New Year’s Eve 2010 through the window of the light rail system in Tacoma, the Link.

There are nine Elephant Car Washes in the Puget Sound area and this one is in Tacoma and was built in 1963.

The Hand of God, the Youth For Christ Mural

Today I drove past the Youth for Christ mural on the Alliant Continuum Care Building at 201 N. I Street in Tacoma. The City of Tacoma Public Art Tour site describes the mural as “Two joining hands are rendered by the inclusion of small religious symbols”. It is, of course, a variation of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam which is a fresco on the Sistine Chapel.

The website for Alliant Continuum Care is here http://www.alliantcare.com/ , but I went to the property to see the mural. Part of my effort to see new places with art as part of Tacoma Arts Month.
