Pagliacci Pizza, Edmonds

8648573071_d10c126d54_bSo the plan was to have my meeting and then walk around the charming city of Edmonds, snapping photos of the lovely murals and sculptures and whatever. But that plan was foiled when it started raining really, really hard and then sleeting! Fine. On the way out of town I stopped at perhaps my favorite pizza chain, Pagliacci at  10200 Edmonds Way. This Pagliacci is in a new building, I assume designed for them. It’s really nice looking, great angles and lots of light. The staff was friendly. After I paid for my large Margaretta Pizza, I checked in with Four Square. My phone happily chirped at me that because I checked in I deserve free bread sticks! So I danced back to the counter and showed them my phone and they said “of course”. Now that is customer service!

Just as well that I got the free bread sticks because the drive home to Tacoma was awful, pouring rain and so much sleet or hail that it seemed like there was a slippery inch of it on the highway! Crazy. The delicious bread sticks filled my belly and helped me resist trying to take a slice of pizza out of the box 😉

When I went to the University Pigliacci (the original one) last June, the chain had 22 locations and now they have 24. None in Pierce County though.

Proctor Frozen Yogurt

8641138075_7040707752_zThe Proctor District is really pleasant to stroll around and the addition of Proctor Frozen Yogurt at 2510 North Proctor makes it even better. I ended up combing the lemon with the raspberry/pomegranate and dear daughter has the marshmallow. They were both a treat. The business is housed in what had been a house built in 1905.

North End Community Church

8636807668_632ae7d429_bNorth End Community Church at 3502 N Mullen St, Tacoma, WA 98407 is charming. It was built in 1928 as the Grace Baptist Church. There is a Grace Baptist Church on Vassault now, so maybe the original church moved. The website of North End Community Church is here.

Superior TV

8632736421_580817f4c3_zThe vacant building at 4638 South Yakima had most recently been Superior TV with a living unit upstairs, but its been vacant for a while. A 1977 photo of the property shows it occupied by Superior TV, so they had a pretty long time in the space, most likely repairing the tube TVs that use to be popular.

The building was originally built as Goodwin Drug Store in 1923 and Wm. Seese was the builder.

Jane Clark Park

8629300351_199204af97_bWhen dear husband and I first moved to Tacoma we rented a house right across the street from Jane Clark Park at 4825 N. 39th St., Tacoma, WA 98407. The two of us moved into the house with our two cats and chow dog. We placed our purple camel back couch up against the living room window which had a great view of the above park building. Once a week the park district would offer a dog obedience class and our chow would belly up to the back of the couch and watch like it was a movie made just for her!

Jane Clark Park had its origins in 1935 when the land was purchased in a tax sale. Benjamin L. Harvey provided financial assistance to the park and the park was named in honor of his mother. The park’s amenities include Baseball Field/Softball Field Regulation Lighted,Basketball Court Half Court, Playground, Restrooms, Trails and a summertime Wading Pool.

Tides Tavern

8626036629_12a2526491_z The Tides Tavern at 2925 Harborview Dr, Gig Harbor, WA 98335 is a Gig Harbor institution. The waterfront building was constructed in 1910 and served as the area’s general store. It opened as the Tides Tavern in 1973.

I was there to meet an old friend and we both enjoyed delicious salmon burgers. It was great to have a chance to visit.

Sweet Corn Ice Bars at H Supermarket

8622569833_17274dfc74_z Actually there were two types of sweet corn ice cream bars at the H Mart, which recently opened at 8720 South Tacoma Way in Lakewood. Dear daughter and I visited and found many delightful food items including udon (which she loves), mochi, fresh turmeric, those long vegetable things (I knew I should have written down what they were!), an entire aisle of dried seaweed, all sorts of pickled foods (see the yellow pickled radishes) and fresh seafood. There is a large produce section and all the day to day household items one would need. The employees were super friendly.

The H in H Mart stands for “Han Ah Reum,” a Korean phrase meaning “arm full of groceries.” The chain’s website shows two other locations in Washington State (Federal Way and Lyonwood. There are also locations in 12 other states and Canada, mostly on the east and west coasts. They recently opened a location in London.

Epic Mural in Puyallup

8620091265_44c58141f9_bI was driving around the other day and found this terrific mural 2914 East Main Avenue. It is a Trompe-l’œil style and I was tempted to drive on through to the beautiful mountain sunrise. But of course that would be a bad idea. I think the building is used as apartments. There is a sign on one of the doors that says “Due to the recent thefts, the upstairs tenant has been instructed to shoot … then call police“.

EAT at Shake, Shake, Shake

EATDear daughter has been working hard on her mural, so as a treat I took her and her friend out for a meal at the recently opened Shake Shake Shake, 124 North Tacoma Avenue. Dear daughter had the Cheese Griller with a chocolate shake, her friend had the Classic Deluxe Burger with a coconut shake and I had a Tacoma Dog with a frozen latte shake. The service was fast and friendly, the food tasty and the decor a lot of fun. Dear daughter declared her shake, the best she’d ever had. Shake, Shake, Shake opened March 13, 2013. The building was constructed in 1925 as a grocery store and in 1938 became an I.G.A. In 1999 it was converted to a mini mart.
