Wish & Pray This Will Never Happen Again

Life Center on Union Avenue has devoted a corner of its property to a 9.11 Memorial. On both sides of a freestanding wall people have written their memories and reflections.  There are words from children too young to remember the day and from adults that were affected.  Some used the preprinted cards and filled in their memories and other brought their own paper.

Artco has the best sketchbooks!

I was informed today that dear daughter had to have a new sketchbook and that Artco was the place to go! Well, OK.  We went to the Artco on Sixth Avenue and purchased the sketchbook, some Halloween decorations, some art paper and some markers. I looked longingly at the art inks, but really don’t have a use for them at this time. Maybe later!

A great deal for lunch@St. Joes

I can think of four Tacoma places off hand to have a tasty, healthy lunch on the cheap.

  1. The culinary school at Bates College
  2. The Neighborhood Bistro at Goodwill
  3. The cafeteria in the Utilities Building off Union Ave
  4. St. Joe’s Hospital

Friday’s new place is #4 the Cafeteria at St. Joes (1717 South J Street, Tacoma). I needed to be there to see a patient and it was around lunchtime. So I went down to the lower level (not the snack bar) and had a lightly breaded fish sandwich.  It was huge and delicious and came with a mountain of fries and a soda! All for under $5.00!  There was plenty of seating both inside and outside.  Parking is also free and not that hard to find.  Really, nobody says “let’s go to the hospital and have lunch!”, but they should. 😀

Rite Aid on Pearl

It was extra hot today and I needed a cool drink. Rite Aid at 1912 Pearl Street was a good choice since I also needed band-aids. The Rite Aid was just like every other Rite Aid, but the cashier was particularly upbeat and delightful. That makes such a difference!

Alaska Street Reservoir

The Alaska Street Reservoir is located on the south side of South 19th Street between South Wilkeson and South Ainsworth.  There are trees painted on the side of the reservoir and for something so large it blends surprisingly well.  The reservoir provides drinking water for the city of Tacoma.

A geodesic dome!

There is just something cool about geodesic domes and this one which is occupied by Grant and Associates at 3002 S 47th St. Tacoma, WA 98409 is the only one I know in Tacoma.  The building was constructed in 1978.

For more information about geodesic domes, go to this web page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodesic_dome

A lovely day at Penrose State Park

Penrose State Park is one of the prettiest parks around. Situated on Mayo Cove at 321 158th Avenue Kp South, Lakebay, WA. the park offers over two miles of shoreline, picnic tables, shelters, a grassy area and a rocky beach. It is obviously a popular spot for pleasure boats and kayakers. Dear daughter and I walked a fair distance along the beach, discovering that flip flops were a poor shoe choice considering the slippery mud and rocks/shells filled with barnacles.  But we went slowly and did OK. The best part was wading in the water and flipping over rocks to catch little crabs, both regular and hermit. In the picture of shells below some of the shells house hermit crabs and some snails.

Celebrating Summer at the Proctor Farmer’s Market

Although it is September, Summer seems to be here still. Perhaps to make up for its very late arrival this year! The Proctor Farmer’s Market was packed with cheerful folks in the summer outfits. I strolled from one end to another and came away with a flat of blackberries (soon to be cobbler), organic pumpkin dog treats which the dogs love, zucchini, corn and pop in your mouth delicious cherry tomatoes.

The market will be open until November 19th and operates between the hours of 9 – 2.  There website is here http://www.proctorfarmersmarket.com/

Espress O Yourself

The first full day back at work for a while called for a treat. But not caffeine because it was too late in the day. Espress O Yourself at 1009 Regents Blvd at Alameda Ave in Fircrest, won me over with a strawberry lemonade smoothie that was very delicious! I went in instead of taking advantage of the drive through lane.  While waiting for my drink, I munched on a couple of free chocolate covered espresso beans. Espress O Yourself (love that name) is more than a coffee shop. They serve a light breakfast and lunch and have indoor and outdoor seating.
