Jewell Day Spa

Jewell Day Spa at 2501 6th Avenue hosted a Spring Fling today with various, local vendors. Dear daughter and I cam away from it with amazing caramels, a lovely purse, a box of cupcake bandages and two tickets for the Tacoma Art Bus.

The spa itself looks wonderful and offers a variety of services. Their website is here.

I didn’t think any of my photos did the spa’s ambiance justice. But I did like a photo of a yellow dress that I took a few doors down.

Jackson Hall was for nursing students

Today I participated in an earthquake drill at Jackson Hall 314 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.  The building had been known as the Tacoma General Hospital Nurses
Quarters / Jackson Hall and was named after Samuel Morley Jackson, banker and long time hospital board member.

The building was the site of a nursing school which was established in 1895 and closed in 1980. In the middle of that time (1945-1947), the original building was demolished and the “new” building constructed. The building became the Tacoma General Medical Office Building in 1980 and is currently being used as hospital space. In fact, the corridors connect under Martin Luther King, Blvd into Tacoma General Hospital!

For images of the nursing school/dorm as it was, go this Tacoma Public Library site http://search.tpl.lib.wa.us/images/dt6n.asp?ADDRESS=314+and+WAY&UNIQUE=BUILD

UPS was a good experience

UPS

I hate mailing boxes around the holidays. I hate the crowds and the waiting and the cost. I hate that I’m always sending when it is questionable about if the box will make it there in time. But there I was again.

After work I sat in the car and made sure that all of the presents were in the boxes I found and taped them up. I was thinking I’d go to the UPS on South 38th near the mall, but then I remembered there was a UPS in Green Firs Shopping Center in University Place. Worth a try. I drove past the Post Office on South 27th and there was a line to get into the parking lot to get in line to mail boxes. Wonderful (that was sarcasm). Onward to UPS. When I got there the lot was crowded, but I found a space pretty quickly. I went in and there were only two workers. Each one had a customer and there was one other lady in front of me. I couldn’t believe my luck! I was in and out in under 10 minutes and shipping was less then I expected. I checked online and both boxes are due to be delivered by Tuesday. I could have spent an extra $25 to have them delivered on Monday, but no need. I celebrated by going over to Trader Joe’s for some holiday goodies to share. I’m so glad the shipping is over. Next year I’ll do it earlier for sure and I’ll definitely go back to UPS in Green Firs!

City Blocks for Serious Fun

Yesterday I stopped at Freighthouse Square for dinner before I went off to a class. While there I stopped at City Blocks, which is at 440 East 25th Street, Suite 46, Tacoma WA 98402. Their facebook page says that they are the “The world’s only public LEGO Commercial Art Studio”. Indeed when I visited they were happy to show me the Lego custom pieces they were working on and they were pretty cool! More info can be found on their Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/cityblocks

Columbia Bank, Westgate Branch

Late night at work today and take out at Joeseppi’s Italian Ristorante. But I needed a new place of the day. So I pivoted and snapped a photo of Columbia Bank at 5727 North 21st Street, Tacoma, WA 98406. Columbia Bank is a Washington state-chartered full-service commercial bank.

LA Fitness

I’d like to write that I went into LA Fitness at 5915 Sixth Avenue and had a vigorous workout, but the truth of the matter is that I snapped the photo while waiting for my dear husband’s birthday pizza to be ready for pick up! But it looks like a very nice health club! 😀

Herbal Wellness

Sacred Plant Medicine at 1912 Center Street has some great signs on their exterior walls. The building was constructed in 1928 and was occupied by the Northwestern Bakery. In 1937 it was occupied by Butler Canning and in 1940 Buffelen Furniture Co. was in place and then closed. In 1944 there was a fire. In 1955 it was Buffelen Woodworking Co. Seems to me that in the past few years it was a cabinet shop and then vacant for a while. And now it is Sacred Plant Medicine. `

I miss Mrs. Frisby’s Bakery

We hadn’t lived in Tacoma all too long before we discovered Mrs. Frisby’s Bakery at 710 South 38th Street in the Lincoln District. We would go there every so often. I was fond of their moist, delicious brand muffins and my husband like their bear claws.  When our daughter was little we would take her to watch the ladies decorating cakes. The bakery had been around since 1930 and closed in 2000. The space was vacant for a long time, but is now occupied by Thinh Xuan Ho, M.D.

The Tacoma Public Library has a photo of the bakery from 1956 here:

Evening Glow at Bucky’s

I was driving home looking for something just a little bit interesting to use as my new place of the day when the afternoon light hit Bucky’s and really made the yellow color light up.  This Bucky’s is located at 6318 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA.
